Gibbs faces action for curfew violation

JOHANNESBURG, May 5: South African opener Herschelle Gibbs, facing police inquiry after being named in the sensational match-fixing case involving sacked skipper Hansie Cronje, faces disciplinary action for curfew violation during the recent one-day series against Australia.

The United Cricket Board of South Africa (UCB) will hold a disciplinary commission of inquiry against Gibbs for violating curfew at Cape Town.

Team manager Goolam Raja said Gibbs had broken the rules and would have to face the consequences.

Gibbs, who is one of the five South African players named in the match-fixing case registered by the Delhi Police alleging wrongdoing during the march one-day series in India, will face the disciplinary panel on May 12, he said.

South African cricket officials said Gibbs had also violated curfew in Wellington during the team’s New Zealand tour and was fined 5000 rands (approx. Rs 28,000).

It is also alleged that he breached team curfew rules during the Indian tour, but Rajah said he knew of no such incident.

I only know of the development in Wellington. Over there Herschelle went on the town and came back late. We have rules and he had broken them, he said.

Gibbs is also in the media glare following reports that he was the father of a three-and-a-half-year-old love child.

The child’s mother, 21-year-old Liesel Fuller from Cape Town whom the batsman is said to have first met about eight years ago, has been quoted as claiming the child was conceived During a single night of passion and that Gibbs told her not to have the baby. But I decided to keep the baby and he gave his full support, media reports quoted her as saying.

When asked for his reaction, Gibbs said the matter was private. (PTI)

Match-fixing case
Delhi HC dismisses Kalra’s petition challenging remand

NEW DELHI, May 5: The Delhi High Court today dismissed a petition filed by Rajesh Kalra challenging his remand to police custody.

Rajesh Kalra is currently in judicial custody and lodged at the Tihar jail on charges of his involvement in the match fixing controversy. Yesterday, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) had sought transfer of Kalra’s custody for interrogating him over alleged violation of foreign exchange rules in the match-fixing scandal.

Additional Solicitor General S B Jaisinghani said that crucial evidence would be lost if Kalra was not questioned by ED officials. He urged Justices Anil Dev Singh and B A Khan to let the ED interrogate Kalra in its premises for about eight hours. For that, his custody should be transferred from jail to police, Mr Jaisingham said.

Today, the matter came up before Justice Usha Mehra and Madan Lokur who said the ED can question Kalra at the Tihar Jail. However, Mr Jaisinghani said proper questioning is not possible and secrecy cannot be maintained when policemen are around.

ED officials say investigations into certain foreign exchange transactions have reached a crucial stage following the recovery of a diary from Kalra’s home. The diary contains names, addresses and telephone numbers of cricket bookies, one of whom is under interrogation.

Kalra has denied that the diary belongs to him and alleges that ED officials are mentally torturing him.

The match-fixing controversy, involving South African cricket captain Hansie Cronje and three of his teammates, took off with the arrest of Kalra about a month ago.

ED officials are also interrogating film actor Kishan Kumar who was arrested on charges of allegedly violating the Foreign Exchange Regulation Act (FERA) for certain transactions through hawala channel and sent to jail.

The arrest of Kumar by the ED on April 14 under sections eight and nine of the FERA came after Delhi police failed to interrogate him for his alleged involvement in the match-fixing case. Police unsuccessfully tried thrice to interrogate him at a Noida nursing home when he was reportedly medically unfit for questioning. (UNI)

V V S Laxman left out of 25-strong probables list

MUMBAI, May 5: The national selectors today dropped a bombshell by leaving out Ranji Trophy record-setting batsman V V S Laxman from the 25-strong list of probables whom they picked for the Asia Cup conditioning camp to be held at Pune from May 15 to 24.

Laxman, who was in blazing form with a string of centuries in the final rounds of Ranji Trophy including a ton against Mumbai in the final and a triple hundred in the semi-final against Karnataka, was ignored as "we all thought him to be test material", selection committee Chairman Chandu Borde told reporters here.

The stylish Hyderabad batsman had obliterated the previous season-high record tally of Karnataka’s Vijay Bharadwaj by scoring over 1,300 runs in Ranji Trophy this season only to be cold-shouldered by the selectors who included Tamil Nadu’s Sridharan Sriram as one of the openers.

"We all thought Laxman was not one-day material, especially in the wake of his performance in the one-day tri-series in Australia. On the other hand Sriram too has scored lot of runs in domestic cricket and can bowl and field well also", Borde explained.

The selectors, however, chose to reward another Tamil Nadu batsman - left-handed Hemang Badani - for his good domestic show this season by including him in the 25-strong list which would be pruned to 14 on May 22 at Pune with skipper Sourav Ganguly and coach Kapil Dev in attendance.

Ganguly was named only today as the captain while Kapil was not invited for the meeting. The tournament is to be held at Dhaka from May 28 to June 7.

Board Secretary Jaywant Lele explained Kapil Dev’s absence by saying it had been the practice not to invite the coach when the selectors chose probables, and not the final team.

"Both Ganguly and Kapil Dev would be invited for the May 22 meeting to choose the final 14-member team", Lele added.

He refused to answer any query on the startling revelation made yesterday by former Board chief Inderjit Singh Bindra that it was the current India coach who had offered Manoj Prabhakar Rs 25,00000 as bribe to underperform in Sri Lanka during the 1994 Singer Cup series.

"Ask the president (A C Muthiah). I have nothing to say", Lele said. He also said it was the coach’s private view that all cricket activities should be banned for six months till the match-fixing scandal was over.

"The board has its international commitments and has to fulfil them", he said, adding the matter had not been discussed with Kapil Dev by the board. "We will take it up at the appropriate time" was all he would say.

The selectors also expectedly included Mumbai stalwart Vinod Kambli for the camp along with Maharashtra all-rounder Hrishikesh Kanitkar, who was ignored for the entire series against South Africa and the subsequent Sharjah tour.

Also back in contention is experienced Baroda stumper Nayan Mongia, who has not played one-day internationals after last year’s World Cup.

Three other newcomers are Baroda’s left-arm medium-pacer Zaheer Khan, Punjab’s medium-pacer Reetinder Singh Sodhi and Orissa opener Shiv Sunder Das.

Another notable omission from the list is Karnataka’s seasoned paceman Venkatesh Prasad. (PTI)

Ganguly to lead India in Asia Cup

MUMBAI, May 5: Sourav Ganguly was today expectedly chosen as captain of the Indian cricket team for the May 28-June 7 Asia Cup to be held in Dhaka.

The national selectors, who met here, also chose 24 other players for the conditioning camp to be held in Pune from May 15 to May 24, while exempting Rahul Dravid and Anil Kumble from attending it.

Dravid and Kumble are busy fulfilling their English county commitments, but will be available for the tournament.

The selectors are to choose the final 14-member team on May 22 at Pune.

The probables: Sourav Ganguly (Capt), Sachin Tendulkar, Mohd Azharuddin, Ajay Jadeja, Rahul Dravid, Anil Kumble, Jacob Martin, Hemang Badani, Mohd Kaif, Shiv Sunder Das, Robin Singh, Reetinder Singh Sodhi, Vinod Kambli, Ajit Agarkar, T Kumaran, Amit Bhandari, Zaheer Khan, Syed Saba Karim, Nayan Mongia, Nikhil Chopra, Sridharan Sriram, S Ramesh, Sunil Joshi, Hrishikesh Kanitkar, Murali Kartik. Aparna’s chances virtually nil
Gopichand clinches berth to Olympics

NEW DELHI, May 5: India’s national champion P Gopichand has clinched a direct berth to the Sydney Olympics badminton event but his woman counterpart Aparna Popat’s hopes have all but vanished due to the three-month ban imposed by the world body for taking a banned substance.

Aparna Popat, whose ranking has plummeted following the penalty imposed by the International Badminton Federation, has been listed seventh among nine reserves and holds only a theoretical chance of making it to the September 15 to October 1 competition.

India number two Nikhil Kanetkar has also made it to the reserve list, at sixth out of nine, but his chances also look very slim.

Four-time national champion Gopichand, ranked 34th in the world as per the latest listing, qualified as the 24th player in the men’s singles field of 32 for the games in the list issued by IBF yesterday.

In all 82 men and 80 women, making up a tentative list of 162, representing 26 countries, have been included in the list as per their ranking as on April 30 for the five events -men’s and women’s singles and doubles and mixed doubles.

The qualifiers were selected via a complicated system that restricts to three the maximum number of entries for a country in each event and also ensures participation of at least one player from all the confederations in each event and avoids duplicate’ qualification of players (names of players who have qualified for one event will not be included in other events).

The list includes 32 players each in men’s and women’s singles while 20 pairs each have been picked for doubles.

Powerhouses China, Indonesia and Denmark will have three players each in men’s singles while China and Japan will have the maximum number in the women’s section.

Popat, whose ranking has slumped from 28 on March 30 to 54 after losing a whopping 348 points she earned for her superb performance in the Uber Cup zonal round held here in February because of the ban, holds only a theoretical chance of figuring in the Sydney Games.

The former world junior runner-up’s chances were badly hit when she was slapped the ban after she inadvertently took a medicine for cold that contained a banned substance. Popat had declared that she was taking the medication D-cold but had to pay the penalty for not being aware that it contained the banned substance.

The Bangalore-based shuttler’s hopes of making it to the first premier sporting event of the new millennium rest on withdrawals due to injuries or duplication of names after the final selection by National Olympic Committees, who will advise IBF by May 26 on the best three players of their choice in case there are more players among the top 16 from that country.

IBF, after receiving intimation from NOC’s, will add 10 more names and issue a final list of 172 players on June 28. The draw for the Olympics will be released on September 7.

Kanetkar, ranked 56th in men’s singles, has been placed sixth in the reserve list. But both Kanetkar and Popat have virtually no chance of making it to the olympics as there are too many players ahead of them. (PTI)
