Sachin blames inabilityto play as
team for0-2 BANGALORE, Mar 6: Indian cricket captain Sachin Tendulkar today blamed the inability of his side to play as a team and a letdown by the batsmen for the 0-2 test series rout against South Africa. In contrast, Tendulkar said, team approach spelt success for South Africa, adding that though there were individual performances it is important for the other guys to chip in with decent performances. The batting maestro, who suffered his fifth successive test defeat leading the side as South Africa completed a crushing innings and 71-run defeat on the fifth morning at the Chinnaswamy stadium here today, refused to complain about the pitches and denied the Indian approach was not correct. Tendulkar said he did not want to complain about the pitches in Mumbai, where India lost by four wickets, and here, but said Indians paid for not building partnerships. There were not too many big partnerships. We scored 15-20 runs and got out. Thats where we have to put a lot of focus, he told reporters after the match. Asked about Indias approach, he said it was not only because of our approach. It is also luck sometimes. In this test, so many catches fell between short leg and backward short leg. So, to a certain extent, it is also luck. Asked whether he felt that Mohd Azharuddin, who cracked a superb 102 after being out of favour for over seven months, could have stayed on and saved India, he said after making a 100, if you are looking at the negative side, it is unfair to the player. India lose series with innings defeat despite Azhar ton BANGALORE, Mar 6: Despite a glorious comeback century by Mohd Azharuddin, India crashed to an embarrassing innings and 71 runs defeat against South Africa in the second and final cricket test to suffer their first home series reverse in 13 years and a 0-2 rout today. The 37-year-old Azharuddin, who returned to the team after seven months in the wilderness, struck his 22nd test hundred with aggressive strokeplay that defied age and mocked at his critics, but failed to stay on and complete the stiff task. The hosts simply caved in thereafter on the fifth and final day at the Chinnaswamy stadium here. India, overnight 196 for five in their second innings and struggling to avoid an innings defeat, looked like fighting it out, but Azhars departure for 102 triggered a collapse as they were dismissed for 250 within one hour this morning. The Indian innings ended once they lost the ninth wicket as indisposed wicketkeeper Nayan Mongia did not bat. Azharuddin, unbeaten overnight on 73, smashed left-arm spinner Nicky Boje - who captured 5 for 83 - for a six and two fours in succession and took just 18 balls today to reach his century to join skipper Sachin Tendulkar as Indias second highest test century-maker behind Sunil Gavaskar (34). But he fell immediately thereafter, hooking paceman Shaun Pollock to Gary Kirsten at square leg to end a 96-run sixth wicket stand with a courageous Anil Kumble (28), and the next four wickets fell for just 10 runs. It was Indias first home test series defeat since their 0-1 loss to Pakistan in 1986-87 - they lost their fifth and final test at the same venue after the first four were drawn -and their first innings defeat at home since the West Indies beat them by an innings and 46 runs at Calcutta in 1983. It was the fifth straight test loss for outgoing captain Tendulkar, who had already notched up the dubious distinction as the first Indian captain to concede four test matches in a row after the four-wicket defeat in the first game at Mumbai. India, skittled out for 158 before conceding a massive 321-run first innings lead as South Africa piled up 479 in reply, fared better in their second knock thanks only to Azhar, but could not prevent the eventual result. Azhar smashed 13 fours and two sixes (227 min, 170 balls) in his aggressive knock and raced to his century today. He jumped out to hoist Boje over midwicket for a six and then hit the next two balls over long-on and long-off for fours as the spinner tried the ploy of pitching outside the leg stump. Playing his 99th test, he brought up the only century in the series with a brace off Pollock, but ended Indian hopes of staving off innings defeat when his adventurous hook off a Pollock bouncer Gave Kirsten a straightforward catch. Kumble (122 m, 104 b, 3 x 4), rock steady in his supporting role till then, fell leg before padding up to a straighter ball from Boje, and Murali Kartik (2) swept the spinner to Herschelle Gills at square leg before paceman Allan Donald (2/56) completed the win by removing Nikhil Chopra (3). The 27-year-old Boje, who made a memorable debut by finishing with match figures of 7 for 93 and a superb knock of 85, was declared man of the match. Jacques Kallis, whose anchoring knocks both in Mumbai and Bangalore played a huge role in South Africas series triumph, was chosen the man of the series. The miserable run of India continued, the hosts losing the Mumbai test within three days before this innings defeat with their batting and bowling in disarray. South African skipper Hansie Cronje, who had predicted that his team will be much tougher than it was when it suffered a 1-2 defeat in the 1996-97 tour of India, delivered his promise while his counterpart Tendulkar completed his second tenure as captain on a totally disappointing note. The teams now move on to Kochi to play the first game of the five-match one-day series on March 9. (PTI) |

PESHAWAR, Mar 5: Pakistan named former test star Javed Miandad as their new test team coach today after attempts to lure a foreign Guru fell through. He is the best choice available, Pakistan Cricket Board ad-hoc committee chairman General Tauqir Zia said of Miandads appointment. Miandads tenure will last till July this year. Miandad quit as Pakistan coach shortly before last years World Cup, citing family commitments amid rumours of a rift with senior players. The PCB had planned to hire Englands Geoff Boycott or South African barry richards but negotiations fell apart after hefty demands. The board fired a string of coaches last year before appointing incumbent Intikhab Alam as coach in December. Pakistan sacked Mushtaq Mohammad, South African Richards Pybus and Wasim Raja in between Miandad and Alam. Alam, coaching the series against Sri Lanka, will make way for Miandad on the trip to Sharjah where Pakistan meet South Africa and India in a tri-series one-day tournament starting on March 22. My first task is the tour to the West Indies and I will do my best to make Pakistan victorious there, Miandad told AFP. Miandad, Pakistans most successful batsman with more than 8,000 test runs, was appointed coach in August 1998 and guided Pakistan to a 2-1 test win over arch rival India in India. (AFP) |

Pak gain upper hand as Akhtar takes 5 wickets PESHAWAR, Mar 6: Speed king Shoaib Akhtar took 5-75 as Pakistan gained the upper hand on the second day of the second cricket test against Sri Lanka here today. Pakistan, having lost their last four tests, finished the day at 67-1 with skipper Saeed Anwer on 37 and Yousuf Youhana on three. Earlier Sri Lankas innings was wrapped up for 268 with Marvan Atapattu topscoring with a dour 75 scored in 348 minutes from 254 balls Speedster Akhtar, warned twice by umpire Mohammad Nazir for running onto the pitch in his follow through before lunch, struck a vital blow after the break by bowling Atapattu through sheer pace for 75. The 24-year-old speedster was playing his first test after being banned for having an illegal bowling action in December. He was later cleared by the International Cricket Council (ICC) in February. Akhtar bowled with venom and took three wickets in 21 deliveries to put the brakes on Sri Lanka. He snared two wickets in consecutive overs with Romesh Kaluwitharana caught behind off his glove for four and Pramodya Wickremasing he was bowled for a duck. Chaminda Vaas, who remained unbeaten on 17, stood firm to add 45 runs with Ravindra Pushpakumara and Muttiah Muralitharan later in the visitors innings. Muralitharan hit an enterprising 22, including three fours and a six off 13 balls, before becoming Akhtars fifth victim. The batsman had taken 13 off one Abdur Razzak over, including a straight six. Akhtars only previous five wicket test haul was his 5-43 against South Africa at Durban in 1997-98. Sri Lanka had resumed the day at 88 for two and added 91 in the first session extended for half an hour because of a rain-affected opening day for the loss of one wicket. Atapattu and Aravinda De Silva took the total to 121 before left armer Aamir Sohail came on and trapped De Silva leg before for 33. De Silva, who hit a polished 112 in his teams narrow two wicket win in first test, hit three fours. Atapattu reached his fourth test fifty in 241 minutes. Sri Lanka lost five wickets after lunch for just 37 runs and slumped to 223-8 from a comfortable 186-3. Jayawardene partnered Atapattu in a stand of 65 for the fourth wicket and looked set to build their teams innings. At 186 Jayawardene hit a wild drive off Sohail and was well caught above the head by Shahid Afridi for 36, which included six fours. Tillekeratne Dilshan made 13 before being bowled by off-spinner Arshad Khan. Razzak and Sohail finished with two wickets apiece. Anwar and Aamir Sohail gave Pakistan a sound start of 54 before Sohail played casually against part time bowler Mahela Jayawardene and was caught in the slips for 22. Anwar was in good touch and hit seven delightful boundaries. Waqar Younis did not play today because of a stomach problem while Abdur Razzak was plagued by hamstring problem. Waqars absence followed similar problems for Pakistan in the first test when it lost Wasim Akram due to a groin injury in the first test after bowling just 13 deliveries. (AFP) |
