Global warming Sir, Pollution is associated with our daily life. Every day we contribute, knowingly or unknowingly, to one type of pollution or the other. Among various types of pollution, air pollution has remained a cause of serious concern since long. The burning of fossil, fuel, emission of harmful gases from factories deforestation and urbanisation has lead to increase in air pollution. Every year about 23 billion tonnes of carbondioxide are emitted over the world. All these factors have resulted in the increase in temperature of atmosphere immediately surrounding the earth. This heating up of the atmosphere is called Green House Effect which leads to the Global Warming. Global warming is altering the habits, migration and breeding of animals. This could eventually affect humans. Already, Coast Rican forest birds are migrating to cooler areas. And it is estimated that sea birds of the Pacific Coast might vanish in ten years. These changes will have a very serious impact on human welfare as there are million of people around the world who depend on wild life for food (directly or indirectly), clean water and medicine. A large amount of obnoxious gas carbon dioxide is being emitted world wide. The emission is mainly due to the burning of fossil fuels and from cement factories. The amount of emission of carbonioxide is 5301 tonnes only in the United States of America (USA). If this trend of harmful gases emission remains increasing as such, it is estimated that the global temperature will rise by 4.5 degree celcius by the year 2030. This will result in melting of Polar ice caps and in turn flooding of low lying areas. A study by the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) had documented how several species of birds, plants and other wildlife were adopting to gradual warming of the Earth's atmosphere. Environmentalists have not yet noted the impact of global warming on human food supplies. The first sign of the future trouble could be in something like the decline in the Population of ducks which are hunted in US. This in itself should be an indication of troubled times to come. It is said that the only option to protect animals is to adopt strict restrictions on the emission of Green House gases which are responsible for the gradual increase in the temperature of the planet. It is suggested to introduce a certain percentage of ethanol methanol to gasoline so as to reduce the emission of carbonmonoxide and the hydrocarbons. It is also suggested to set up a high level body to look into the issues concerning the vehicular and industrial emission. The solution to this global pollution lies in the effective functioning of the Pollution Control Boards. Yours etc.. |
'No inauguration No minister visited us' Sir, Apropos news item ''Four more tubewells inaugurated'' dated 23 January, 2000. The places where tube wells were inaugurated are, Ajit Nagar, Matto Colony, Bhour Camp and Exhibition ground. In fact, Minister for works and other dignatories never visited Bhour Camp on the said date, neither any inauguration took place, though a marble plate was engraved on the wall of Tube Well wall bearing the name of the concerned Minister with date. A large number of local people were present to welcome the Minister but to no avail. When some officers of the PHE Deptt. from Ajit Nagar broke the news that the Minister was not coming for inauguration, people felt very disappointed and it caused resentment among them. It was later on told that the security personnel who came for security check in the morning had informed that the car of the Minister could not reach on the site due to bad road condition. This one single gesture reveals the poor plight of the people of this rea. How they reach to the main road? How their children go to school? How ailing persons go to the hospital? The said Minister and other political personalities accompanying the Minister on that day should have done a soul searching on these questions. After all they are representative of the people. For the last ten years people of this area are striving hard for the maintenance of the said road but to no avail. I would like to draw the attention of Sh Ali Mohd Sagar and other high officers of the works department to kindly get this road immediately repaired. Yours etc... |
