People block road at Tope against water scarcity Excelsior Correspondent JAMMU, June 17: The inmates of Top Sherkhania Government quarters today staged a demonstration and disrupted the movement of traffic for over four hours on Parade, Paloura road in protest against the scarcity of drinking water and power failure in the Colony. The dharna was only lifted after the intervention of the Police authorities who assured the protestants that water supply will be made available through takers from tomorrow morning. Early in the morning the irate mob erected barricades on the road and burnt the tyre tubes to disrupt the traffic movement in protest against the authorities failure to resume the drinking water supply in the Colony. The demonstrators who shouted slogans against the PHE and district administration warned to resume the agitation in case the water supply was not resumed by tomorrow. The agitating demonstrators alleged that the colony was without water supply for last three days and despite the repeated pleas the authorities paid no attention to resume the drinking water supply in the locality. Meanwhile, many other areas of Jammu City and outskirts are also facing acute scarcity of drinking water and power crisis at present forcing the people to come on roads and stage demonstrations. According to reports the power and water supply was completely disrupted in Bantalab and its surroundings since yesterday evening after the lines were snapped by hail storm. According to residents of the area they have been facing the severe water crisis since the on set of this Summer. However, the power supply was resumed late in the evening today. The water supply was also affected in Patoli, Darmal, Barnai, Gurah and Deena Nagar localities since Thursday after the Barnai Tube well developed a snag. This is for the second time in last ten days that the tube Well at Barnai got damaged disrupting water supply in the area. Two days back people in the locality had demonstrated by blocking Akhnoor road in protest against the power and water crisis. |

As per a release, the women belonging to villages of Balahar, Datyal, Chhan, Ranglan, Saprain, Khurd, Karsainee, Rian, Upper and Lower Thakarpura took part in the demonstration. Addressing the gathering Mrs Santosh Khajuria, general secretary, Mahila Adhikar Sangthan alleged that Government has totally failed to provide the basic infrastructure to the people of the villages due to which the women have become most sufferers. She said the villagers are without roads, electricity and drinking water facilities. |
NC Minority Cell holds convention Excelsior Correspondent JAMMU, June 17: National Conference, Minority Cell organised a one day convention here today in which the elements demanding trifurcation of the J&K State were taken to task. As per a release, the convention was chaired by Mr B L Bhat, MLC and general secretary of the Cell. It also discussed other issues being faced by the people of the state. A resolution was adopted on the occasion in which the stand of Chief Minister, Dr Farooq Abdullah that unity of J&K State will not be compromised and the state will not be allowed to divide at any cost was fully endorsed. Through another resolution the Cell fully supported the autonomy as demanded by the Party. It maintained that the autonomy will help in more integration of J&K with rest of India. It said the internal autonomy for J&K is imperative for strengthened the bonds and relations with the Centre. Through the third resolution the Cell has welcomed the decision of the Government for holding negotiations with Kashmiri Pandits on their rehabilitation back in Kashmir Valley. It urged the Government that the process of dialogue would be intensified and social interaction programme between the minority and majority community should be encouraged. Through yet another resolution the Government was urged to launch special recruitment drive for migrant youth, enhancement of monthly relief, release of ex-gratia relief for damaged properties was demanded. block hospital road Excelsior Correspondent JAMMU, June 17: Hostel students of Medical College Jammu today blocked road in front of GMC Hospital and disrupted traffic for more than two hours in protest against the power failure in the boys hostel of Medical College Jammu since yesterday evening. More than 100 hostel students, both Post Graduate and MBBS, led by Dr Gurdeep Singh and Noor Illahi Choudhary came on road and staged a dharna demanding immediate restoration of power supply in the hostel. Shouting slogans against the Power Development Department, they alleged that power supply to the hostel has been cut off deliberately by the PDD authorities only to harass the students. They claimed that they were forced to block the road and adopt such agitational path only because the PDD authorities have stoutly refused to restore the power supply despite the fact that examinations of the Medical College students are going on They remained there for more than two hours and disrupted the traffic movement on the road in front of GMC Hospitals main gate. During the dharna, some minor incidents of scuffle between the agitating students and two wheeler riders also took place over the blockade of road. The dharna was lifted only after the intervention of Warden of PG Hostel of Medical College Dr R K Raina and Provost Dr V K Parihar. They assured the agitating students that they have talked to PDD authorities and power would be restored as soon as possible. Later, talking to EXCELSIOR, a PDD official said that failure of power supply to the hostel since yesterday evening was caused because of snapping of conductor and the supply has been restored now. The Provost Dr V K Parihar also confirmed the restoration of the power supply to the hostel. |

BJP to fight autonomy move 'took and nail' Excelsior Correspondent JAMMU, June 17: City Unit of Bharatiya Janata Party has resolved to fight tooth and nail the autonomy move of the National Conference Government that is aimed at disintegration of the State and turning the clock back to 1953. The decision to this effect was taken at a meeting of the city BJP executive held here today under the chairmanship of Satya Paul Grover, City BJP chief State general secretary Bhagwat Swaroop was also present in the meeting to guide the deliberations. Mr Bhagwat Swaroop in his address said that there is great awakening amongst the nationalist forces throughout the State against the evil designs of the ruling National Conference leaders who have not only deprived the people of Jammu and Ladakh. He said it was BJP (the then Praja Parishad) that has fought for the unity of the country and it is the result of that great struggle of 1953 that the Jurisdiction of Election Commission of India. Excelsior Correspondent JAMMU, June 17: Baba Amar Nath Yatra Nyas has assailed the J&K Government decision to register Yatris for Amar Nath pilgrimage at only eight Centres in the country clubbing four to six States together. In a press statement the founder president of the Nayas and working president J&K unit of Vishav Hindu Parishad, Tilak Raj Sharma said that setting up of only few centres for registration of Yatris will cause great deal of inconvenience and hardships to the devotees desirous of undertaking pilgrimage as they shall have to travel a long distance to get themselves registered. Baba Amar Nath Yatra Nyas and Jammu Citizens Reception Committee for Amar Nath Yatra has already demanded setting up registration centres at all the State capitals and in case of States with vast area at more than one place for prompt and convenient registration. They have also demanded on spot registration of Yatris of Jammu for those who cannot travel long distance to their State capitals for the purpose. The Yatra Nayas has also assailed the Government notification asking those desirous of setting up free langars to apply to the Director Tourism, Kashmir for the purpose. Mr Sharma has termed it as an obstructionist and delaying tactic in granting permission for setting up langars by the devotees and philanthropist voluntary organizations as has been experienced in the past. |

The valedictory function was presided over by Prof Y R Malhotra Ex-Vice Chancellor of Jammu University. As per a release while addressing the group of 20 participating teachers Prof Malhotra highlighted the vibrant character of English as a language and explained that it is an important tool in the process of globalisation. He coaxed the teachers to perfect the phonemes before teaching these to the students. He appreciated the initiative of the school management to have rightly identified this theme for a workshop. Programme Director Prof H R Varma, a senior and seasoned stalwart in the field of education asked the teachers to take up this task with untiring devotion.'' Farooq inaugurate Kargil festival Excelsior Correspondent DRASS, KARGIL, June 17: Goshan, a famous Polo Ground in Tehsil Drass of Kargil district about 150 Kms from Srinagar, wore a festive look today when the Chief Minister, Dr Farooq Abdullah inaugurated 9 days Kargil festival 2000 here. Goshan is located in the lap of Tololing and Tiger hills, which too were majestically witnessing the melodious music and kathak dance of Padamshri, Ms Shoba Narryan. The drum beats and the music of this festival were echoed by the Tololing and Tiger hills which last year in the same month witnessed a heavy shelling across the border. In his inaugural address, Dr Abdullah congratulated the local people for returning of normalcy in the area and expressed satisfaction that the people have return back to their homes after leaving these last year. He appreciated the role of the people of the area during the last year's Kargil incursion and said the local population extended their full support to the army and civil administration while pushing back intruders in Tololing and Tiger hills. The Chief Minister also lauded the role of Jammu and Kashmir Police and the district administration during the war. Referring to the need of friendly relations between India and Pakistan, the Chief Minister hoped that Pakistan will reciprocate positively to our efforts in this direction. Dr Abdullah announced that Sub-District Hospital, Drass will be upgraded and the local doctors presently posted outside the Kargil would be transferred and posted in this district to facilitate the people of this area. He on the spot elevated SHO Drass, Mr Sonam Dorjey from Sub-Inspector for his commendable services during the Kargil episode. Referring to the demands putforth by the local, Dr Abdullah assured that these will be looked into and solved as soon as possible. A colourful cultural programme was presented by the local artists of Kargil district. Besides polo match was also organised on the occasion. During the festival days a number of programmes have been chalked out at various places of the district. Ajat asks women to participate in politics Excelsior Correspondent JAMMU, June 17: The Minister for Information and Transport, Mr Ajatshatru Singh stressed upon the women that they should actively participate in politics, which will help in over all development of the State. This he said, while addressing a public meeting at Jhajjar-Kotli today. He said that women of today has equal rights and they should not confine themselves to the four walls of house. They should come out and work shoulder to shoulder with the menfolk in every sphere of life. The Minister said that 33 per cent seats are being kept reserved for women in coming Panchayat elections. Women are builders of nation and as such needs encouragmeent. He also said that the women folk should take it a point to educate their children, who are future of the nation. Referring to the unemployment problem in the State, the Minister said that the educated youth should not be after the Government jobs they should start their own ventures for which Government gives financial loans upto Rs 1.50 lakh under various schemes. By this, the employment problem will be solved to some extent and besides will provide employment to other enemployed youth Mr Singh asked the people that they should keep watch and ward of the ongoing development works in their respective areas and report their progress to the Government. Prof Bhim Singh reiterated his stand that India should involve the foremost leaders of POK and Gilgit in talks to seek the lasting resolution of the situation in J&K. He asserted that the residents of occupied territories are citizens of India and the occupied territory is integral part of the union due to the accession. Pakistan has been using that area and our own people against us because India has not cared to seek liberation of our people, without involving POK leaders, there could be no solution to end bloodshed and violence in J&K. He condemned BJP Govt for its unholy alliance with Farooq Abdullah. Farooq's autonomy formula is the CIA's gameplane to disintegrate India, he cautioned. Mr Harshdev Singh MLA and chairman of the Reception Committee of the samelan accused the State and the Central Govt. for the economic political and recruitment discrimination and disparity with the Jammu province. BJP to oppose autonomy tooth and nail Excelsior Correspondent JAMMU, June 17: The clock will not be allowed to roll back to 1953 position, this resolve of the party was reiterated at the meeting of the party functionaries and senior leaders here today. The meeting was also attended by Mr Narinder Modi. All India general secretary of the Bharatiya Janata Party and Incharge Jammu and Kashmir. He was in the meeting to boost the morale of the workers, who have geared up themselves to fight against the move of the National Conference leaders who want to put the State back to 1953 position when there was no jurisdiction of the central authorities i.e. the Supreme Court, the Election Commission and so on to the State of Jammu & Kashmir. The meeting decided that BJP will oppose tooth and nail these moves of the National Conference those are aimed at weakening of the bonds of unity and integrity of the State with rest of the country, both within and outside the legislature. Rallies demonstrations, burning of effigies of the autonomy committee report will be held and National Conference's nefarious designs will be exposed throughout the State. The meeting discussed and evolved a strategy to fight out this move of the National Conference. Its resolve is that under no circumstances and conditions we will allow to roll the clock back to pre-1953 position.
