Dr Singh selected for UK conference

JAMMU, June 11: Dr Nater Singh Raina Senior Grade Lecturer Govt Degree College Kathua is invited by the University of Wales, Cardiff UK to present his Research paper in the 8th International conference on Landslides 2000. His research work is related with the Himalayan belt, particularly the north western region is said to perced on a layer of rock in motions Himalayan is a part of one of the main seismic belt where large and destructive earthquakes had been experienced in the past. His study reveals that the presence of multicyclic valleys, series of retreating steps, incised meanders and tilted fans of the river Chenab and Tawi basin show the processes of Neo-Tectionisium is present in the Himalayas. These tectonic movements have caused the initial landslides in Jammu and Kashmir region. According to him many Dams of Himalayas are situated on the strucures which are vulnerable points.

Ministry of HRD, University Grand Commission has approved his Research work and sanctioned travel grant in his favour. Department of Science and Technology Govt. of India has also appreciated his research paper and approved expenditure to attend 8th International Conference at UK. Department of Higher Education, Govt of Jammu and Kashmir has already recommended his case for attending this conference.

Dr Nater Singh Raina has completed his graduation from Kathua College and P. G. from Jawahar Lal Nehru University, Delhi, Dr Raina has earned Ph. D degree under the guidance of world known. Geomorphologist Prof. H. S. Sharma Carrier Scientist. His Research work was on Geomorphological study of Tawi basin. He has also done post graduation diploma in Remote Sensing from the Indian Institute of Remote sending, Indian space, Research Organisation, Govt. of India Dehradun.

286 villages to get drinking water: Sagar

SRINAGAR, June 11: Against an expenditure of over Rs. 3.00 crores, drinking water facility is being extended to 286 villages of the State under Accelerated Rural Water Supply Programme (ARP) during current financial year.

This information was given at a review meeting of officers of Public Health Engineering (PHE) here yesterday which was chaired by Minister for Works, Mr Ali Mohammad Sagar. The meeting was told that work on 32 water supply schemes in Kashmir Division and 11 schemes in Jammu Division has been completed.

Addressing the meeting, the Minister said that the Government is committed to provide regular drinking water supply to all the people of the State. He called upon the officers of PHE to work with great zeal and stressed upon them to make available clean drinking water to the masses. He expressed concern over the complaints of the people of some of the areas where people are facing great hardships in getting drinking water.

Mr Sagar said, besides drinking water, better sanitation in the Rural and Urban should be maintained. He said, it is the duty of all citizens of the State to observe clean habits and keep their surroundings clean.

The meeting among others was attended by Principal Secretary, PWD, Special Secretary, PWD, concerned Chief Engineers, Superintending Engineers and Executive Engineers.

CM pays rich tributes to Mirza Afzal Beg

SRINAGAR, June 11: Chief Minister, Dr Farooq Abdullah has paid rich tributes to late Mirza Mohammad Afzal Beg on his 18th death anniversary being observed in the State today.

In a message, Dr Abdullah described the former Deputy Chief Minister and a long time political associate of Sher-I-Kashmir, as a multifacted personality, sagacious political leader and a visionary who provided much needed support to Sher-I-Kashmir in realing the dream of Naya Kashmir which cannot be ignored.

The Chief Minister said that Beg Sahib's role in the people's fight against autocracy and establishment of a democratic set-up based on social justice in the State was commendable. He said one of his contributions of far reaching consequences was implementation of the pioneering and reforms in Jammu and Kashmir as envisioned by Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah.

The Chief Minister said that though the entire leadership of the State led by Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah comprised stalwarts, each of them acknowledge the wit and wisdom of Beg Sahib. He said he himself was highly impressed by the intellect of the late leader.

Recalling Beg Sahib's service to the people of the State and in taking them on road to development and progress. Dr Abdullah said his memory would be a guiding force for the generations to come.

Samvedana gives credit to parents, teachers

UDHAMPUR, June 11: According to Samvedana, first position holder of Matric was very happy on hearing that she got Ist Position in S.S.E.

She told that her parents, school staff and her friends helped her for the great achievement. Her mother really made her base, her father gave her confidence.

She got so many achievements in her life but not like this. Her hobbies are reading books, listening soft music and playing badminton. She wants to do Computer Engineering but her basically target is to become an I.A.S officer.

Ms Sheenam Mehra, who secured 14th Position in S.S.E., gave the credit of success to her parents, her friends and her teachers who really helped her. She wants to become a Pilot or I.A.S officer in future. Her hobbies are playing badminton, shopping, listening music, rock climbing etc.

Ms Aditi Mahajan, who secured 17th position in S.S.E. also gave the credit of success to God, her parents, friends and teachers. She wants to become a Computer Engineer. Her hobbies are painting, gardening, listening music, singing, reading comics, and computers.

JAMMU, June 11: The students of second Semester of the Post-Graduate Department of Chemistry presented a delightful musical programme, The Ultimate Eve, to bid farewell to the final year students, at a function held in University Auditorium here last evening.

Prof A N Sadhu, Dean, Academic Affairs, who was the chief guest, lighted the traditional lamp to mark commencement of the programme. Saraswati Bandanna was the first item presented by the students of the Chemistry Department.

The University Chemical Society and the Post-Graduate Department of Chemistry organised the colourful cultural programme. The two-hour programme of music, dance, skits and songs was highly appreciated by the audience.

Dr Rajeev Gupta, Head, Department of Chemistry, University of Jammu, in his welcome address, said that such functions provide an opportunity to the students to display their latent artistic talent and also have inter-action among themselves. This is a good tradition that farewell programme is organised by the junior students for their seniors in final year studies in the varsity.

Dr Gupta praised the performance of the students and exhorted them to pursue their studies with dedication.

Prof Sadhu stressed the all-round development of students’ personality and called for achieving academic excellence. He said the students should do their best and bring good name to themselves and also the university.

A large number of students, scholars and faculty members attended the colourful cultural programme.

IDP activists organise seminar in Samba

JAMMU, June 11: State secretary of the International Democratic Party (IDP), Mr Hoshiar Singh said that the need of the hours was to switch over from the representative democratic system of India to the participatory democracy.

He was speaking on the inauguration of one-day workshop on the " Empowerment of People" at village Saleter in district Jammu. The programme was organised by Samba Block unit of the IDP. Stressing upon his point he said, the need of the change in the system is because the participation of the people in the village Administration with decision making powers was one of the two imperatives of globalisation, integration and cooperation.

The others who spoke on the occasion included—Karan Singh, Pritam Singh, Mast Ram, Kartar Singh and Nanak Ram.

It is pertinent to mention here that the workers of IDP and Trade union activists of the villages Saleter, Beopnair Garh, Chakwan and Janda also constructed check dams to conserve rain waters in the area. A committee has been formed to launch such projects with the involvement of locals in this Kandi belt.

Postal employees elect body for Jammu Division

JAMMU, June 11: Bharatiya Postal Employees Union (Class Third) of Jammu Division in its annual conference here today elected a body with Mr S K Bakshi as its president.

As per a release, Messrs Inderjet and Bodhraj Gupta were elected as vice presidents first and second respectively. Brij Mohan Sharma was elected as secretary while Mrs Pritima Bhakri was elected as assistant secretary.

Chaman Lal Dhimaw was elected as finance secretary while Ved Prakash Mangotra as organising secretary.

The employees from all the three postal divisions of Jammu participated in today’s elections. The gathering among others was addressed by Mr N K Gupta, general secretary, Bharatiya Mazdoor Sangh (BMS).

Sadhotra lauds NGOs role

JAMMU, June 11: The Minister of State for Food and Supplies, Mr Ajay Sadhotra emphasised that the plans need to be formulated on long term basis to overcome any shortocmings.

Speaking at the annual general body meeting of J&K Confederation volunteer social and charitable organisations, Jammu today, Mr Sadhotra said that by doing so, long term needs in various sectors like infrastructure, education population health etc. would be taken care of.

Referring to the role of the NGOs in the socio-economic development of the society, the Minister said that the contribution of these organisations supplement the efforts of the Government in this regard. He said that these organisations had every right to criticise the Government but the criticism should not be for the sake of criticism alone. The NGOs have an important role to play in building the national character. We must not only ask for our rights but also think what we are doing for the society and the country, he said.

Referring to the demand of devolution of powers to the grass root level, Mr Sadhotra said that it was the National Conference led by Sher-e-Kashmir, Sheikh Mohd Abdullah that ushered in the Panchayati Raj in the State.

Emphasising the need for maintaining ecological balance, the Minister said that only planting trees would not do. It must be endeavour of everybody that these plants are protected and allowed to grow.

In his welcome address, the General Secretary of the confederation, Dr Ashwani Jojra urged the people at large to work for the upliftment of the weaker sections of the society.

The President of the Confederation Mr S S Jamwal in his address gave a resume of the activities of the organisation.

Earlier, the Minister inaugurated the meeting by lighting the ceremonial lamps.

On the occasion, Environmental Education Institute and Kasturba Gandhi Memorial Trust presented vandana and patriotic songs.

A large number of members of various Non-Governmental organisations participated in the meeting and spoke on the occasion.

A lunch was also arranged by the women organisation.

The vote of thanks was presented by dr R R Khajuria and Mrs Lalita Nagar.

Shaheed Tarsem memorial road at Gandli demanded

R S Pura (JAMMU), June 11: Shaheed Tarsem memorial management committee, Gand-li in tehsil R S Pura organised Ist Shahidi Divas of Rifleman, Tarsem Lal of 12 JAKLI Kargil war hero at his native place.

Brig. Bhagwan Singh, Commander 162 Infantry Brigade was the chief guest whereas, Mr B D Sharma, Additional Deputy Commissioner presided over the function.

The function commenced with the wreath laying ceremony by the senior officers of the Army. Earlier, the Guard of Honour was presented to the chief guest by the jawans in full dress. The participants in the function paid their rich tributes to the brave soldier who sacrificed his life for the nation during Kargil war. A cultural programme was also presented on the occasion.

Senior Congress leader and former Member Parliament, Pt Mangat Ram Sharma who was the special guest on the occasion said that country like India is surviving only due to the supreme sacrifices of the soldiers. He appreciated the role of Army jawans during war with Pak in Kargil sector last year.

The Committee presented a memorandum to ADC, Mr Sharma with a charter of demands. They demanded that the road from Gandli Morh to Gand-li village be made pucca and named as Shaheed Tarsem Lal Marg.A gate should also be constructed at the entrance of this road, Gandli be made as a model village under Rural Sanitation scheme and next of kin of this martyr—his sister, Neelam be given employment as a special case. Mr Sharma assured to take up this case with the government.

Others who spoke on the occasion included—Mr Romesh Lal Motten, convenor of the Committee, Retd Col. S L Gupta, secretary Zila Sainik Board, Mr Jaswant Singh, Tehsildar R S Pura, Ashwani Sharma, Gharu Ram, Col. Manohar Lal Kaith (Retd), Ram Dass and Bachan Singh.

Free Medical camp held in Bishnah

JAMMU, June 11: A free medical camp was organised by Sikh Missionary College circle, Jammu at village Dablehar in Bishnah today.

As per a release, about 600 patients were checked by the team of specialist doctors namely—Dr Kamaljit Singh, Dr Avtar Singh Sasan, Dr Baljit Kour, Dr K S Mehta, Dr Karan Singh and Dr Rajinder Sharma.

The next free medical camp is being organised on July 16 at village Viaspur Bangla in tehsil R S Pura.

‘Ensure regular supply of power, water in Purmandal’

JAMMU, June 11: Congress Committee leaders, Mr Gulchain Singh Charak, Mr Lal Singh and Rajesh Bittu have urged upon the State Government to ensure regular supply of power and water to Purmandal Block of Samba sub-division in district Jammu.

According to a release, a meeting of the workers of Congress was held at Bari Brahmana today under the chairmanship of its president Bashir Ahmed Malik. Mr Gulchain Singh Charak was the chief guest while Mr Lal Singh, MLA Basohli and Mr Rajesh Bittu, general secretary Pradesh Youth Congress were the special invitees.

The speakers raised the burning issue of water shortage and power crisis in the area and urged upon the concerned authorities to ensure the uninterrupted supplies to the Block in these hot days. Mr Charak also expressed concern over the increase in militant activities, increase in corruption and hike in the prices of essential commodities.

Mr Lal Singh while appreciating the mobilisation of Congress organisation in the area, held the authorities responsible for not resolving the most genuine problems of the public. Several local leaders also joined Congress Party in this function.

A resolution was also passed in the meeting demanding improvement of road from Bishnah to Palli, relief in favour of victims of hurricans, sealing of the new infiltration routes of militants and improvement in law and order conditions.

Div Comm honours Abhimanyu Sherpa

JAMMU, June 11: Master Abhimanyu Sherpa, a nine years old budding climber of the State was honoured today by the Divisional Commissioner, Jammu, Mr Anil Goswami.

As per a release, Master Sherpa was given a cash prize of Rs 2000 by Mr Goswami, who is also the Chairman of Tawi Trekkers. The budding climber won a bronze medal in the under 12 category of the All India Open sport Climbing competition held at Delhi. He also secured 5th position in the Under 16 category of Millennium Sport Climbing Competition 2000 organised by Delhi Development Authority.

Speaking on the occasion, Mr Goswami congratulated the budding climber for his brilliant achievements at the national level and hoped that he would continue to bring laurels to the State. He also promised all possible help to the Club for the promotion of adventure activities especially sport climbing.

Among others who attended the function included Messrs Shamsher Singh, Vinod Bali, Dhyam Magotra, Rajinder Singh Jamwal, Virender Magotra, C K Khajuria and Sanjay Verma.

NC Minority Cell joint-secy visits Mata Kheer Bhawani

JAMMU, June 11: The joint secretary of National Conference Minority Cell of J&K Mr M L Munshi alongwith thousands of devotees visited the holy Mata Kheer Bhawani.

As per a release, Mr Munshi hailed the Government for transport arrangement and security for the migrants in Kashmir Valley. He was pleased to see love and affection of Muslims with Hindus, who came from various districts. He observed that the Muslims and Hindus were singing there and people received their migrant brothers enthusiastically. They gave full cooperation to migrants who came from Jammu to have darshan of Mata Kheer Bhawani.

The migrants prayed at Kheer Bhawani for early return to their homes and hearths. They wanted that normalcy would prevail in the Valley and destroyed temples and mosques would be built again.
