Decision on induction of AJTs by month end: Tipnis NAGPUR, Jan 10: The decision on acquisition of Advance Jet Trainers (AJTs) for the Indian Air Force would be taken by the month-end, Air Chief Marshal A Y Tipnis has said. The process of finalising the acquisition would be completed within 20 days. The Air Chief Marshal hinted at upgrading the existing avionics, navigational system and electronic warfare to meet the challenges of the new millennium. Dismissing reports that aircraft with less airworthiness were being flown, he said "we are not giving any concession as far as airworthiness is concerned". Listing the priorities, Tipnis said IAF would also acquire Airborne Warning and Control System (AWACS), besides strengthening ground infrastructure for superior air defence, air-to-air refuelling and integration of data flow to improve air capabilities of the IAF. Referring to the remarks by Pakistans military ruler General Parvez Musharraf that the next war between the two countries would trigger nuclear conflagration, Tipnis said "his comments are for domestic consumption". "Pakistan can hardly afford to go by the assumption that it can regulate things to its advantage with the nuclear option", he observed. When asked about non-involvement of services chiefs in tackling the recent hijacking of Indian Airlines plane, Tipnis said "we have certain expertise and we are meant for operations". "There are no ideal solutions to crisis like hijacking but we have to learn a lesson and act accordingly in future", he remarked. (PTI) JALANDHAR, Jan 10: Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal today said he would take up the Non-Resident Indians (NRIs) demand for dual nationality with Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee during his meeting with him in New Delhi tomorrow. Addressing the fourth annual convention of NRIs organised by Punjab NRI Sabha here, he said he would also take up problems NRIs faced in getting visas from Indian missions abroad for visiting India. NRIs hailing from Punjab have been demanding revision of blacklist maintained by Indian Home Ministry, saying even when some of them were granted visas by Indian missions abroad, they were turned back from Indian airports because their names figured in outdated blacklists. The Chief Minister urged NRIs to make investment of their resources and specialised skills in Punjab for the growth of agriculture and education sectors. He called upon them to set up schools of international standard in their respective villages in the state so that posterity could get quality education. (UNI) |
EC directs Bihar to refrain from presenting budget NEW DELHI, Jan 10: Election Commission has directed the RJD Government in Bihar, which goes to polls next month, to refrain from presenting this years budget in the State Assembly saying it would violate the model code of conduct. Commission sources said the State Government has assured that it would not present the 2000-2001 budget and leave the matter to the new Government. The RJD Government headed by Rabri Devi has also indicated to the Commission that since the new Assembly would have enough time in March this year, it did not propose to seek a vote-on-account for the first quarter of the new financial year, the sources said. Assembly elections in Bihar will be held on February 12, 17 and 22. The counting of votes will begin on February 25. The State Government, the sources said, has decided to present only the second supplementary budget to meet the expenditure gaps in the current financial year in the Winter session of the State Assembly beginning today. The Election Commission which met yesterday and today, took stock of the situation after discussing the matter with the Rashtriya Janata Dal president Laloo Prasad Yadav and the Chief Minister Rabri Devi. The State Government has assured the Commission that it would fully adhere to the model of code of conduct. In the light of the code of conduct, which came into force with the announcement of election schedule on Saturday last, the State Government has also decided to suitably recast the Governors address which was to be delivered today. Appreciating the prompt response of the State Government, the Commission expressed confidence that not only in Bihar, the polls would be free and fair in three other states, Orissa, Haryana and Manipur, going to polls next month. The Commission is confident that, in fact, not only in Bihar, but all states going to the polls shortly, all concerned will be conscious that this is the first election in the country in the new year and the new millennium, the sources said. It was also confident that all involved will ensure that this exercise does credit to the country, the parties and the candidates, the sources added. (PTI) |

NEW DELHI, Jan 10: A Delhi court today extended the judicial remand of Mohammed Amiruddin Habib alias Amir Bhai, the alleged main source of money transactions in the multi crore Jain Hawala case, till tomorrow as arguments on his bail plea could not be concluded. Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate (ACMM) Sangeeta Dhingra Sehgal, who had on Friday sent Amirbhai to judicial custody till today, extended his remand for another day after he was produced before her in this afternoon. The alleged Hawala kingpin, who was arrested by a joint team of CBI and ED officials, had sought his release on bail saying no useful purpose would be served by keeping him in jail as the investigating agency had already recorded his statement and filed complaint against him. His counsel Ashok Arora claimed that Amirbhai had also surrendered his passport and he was not likely to abscond or tamper with evidence. However, in its reply filed through counsel Naveen Matta, ED said that the charges against Amir are of serious nature and he had been deliberately evading arrest. The accused is an influencial person and he might tamper with evidence and abscond if released on bail, ED said in its reply. The court adjourned the matter for tomorrow as Arora could not complete his arguments. Amir Bhai, who had been eluding authorities for about five years, was nabbed by Interpol at IGI Airport here on Thursday night after he arrived by a flight from Dubai via Hong Kong. Then he was handed over to CBI and ED officials. (PTI) |
