First e-Business Net Market for Electronic Materials Buyers Suppliers (Excelsior E-mail service) SAN JOSE, Calif., February 14, 2000 - Announcing its arrival as the first e-commerce Net Market for the worldwide electronic materials industry, The Supply.com, Inc. has successfully completed its first round of financing and appointed the initial members of its management team. Based in San Jose, Calif., the start-up company has launched an online service (www.thesupply.com) designed to streamline procurement steps and foster communication between buyers and suppliers of all materials for semiconductor manufacturing, PC board fabrication and package assembly. The company expects to conduct its first commercial transaction by early April and is in active discussions with potential beta customers. Supply chain management is one of the biggest challenges currently facing the electronics industry. As already demonstrated in other industries, e-commerce has the potential to effectively change the supply chain by linking buyers and suppliers more closely. By providing a comprehensive range of services through an open systems-based Net Market, TheSupply.com's business strategy is to give companies improved supply visibility and greater access to electronic materials from existing and new suppliers. "We spoke with buyers and suppliers of materials, and they told us they need greater reach and higher business efficiencies in less time," said president and CEO Geoff Wild. "We're providing these companies with a new service using state-of-the-art technology that enables materials procurement to take place in a global, open Net Market setting. TheSupply.com will facilitate orders, transactions, billing, shipping, tracking and quality assurance services." To fund its launch, TheSupply.com has secured $15 million in first-round financing from Crosspoint Venture Partners, a leading investor in next-generation communications and Internet projects. "We funded TheSupply.com based on the strength of its management team," said Seth Neiman, Crosspoint general partner. "Their vision and experience uniquely qualify them to become the leader in this exciting, new and untapped market." Five veteran executives from the electronic materials and software industries form the foundation of TheSupply.com's management team. Along with Wild, company executives include Atle Fjeld, senior vice president of engineering and chief information officer; Steve Kirtley, senior vice president of marketing and sales; Sunil Kaul, vice president of supply chain systems; and Kirk Fjeldheim, vice president of information systems. Together, they bring more than 100 years of relevant business experience to the start-up. Wild has a track record in successfully growing and developing high-technology companies. He was previously president of the $1-billion electronic materials division of AlliedSignal. Prior to that, he was president and division director of Johnson Matthey Electronics, a major producer of PVD (physical vapor deposition) consumables, PC boards and semiconductor packaging materials. Fjeld joined TheSupply.com from Siebel Systems, the world's leading provider of e-business applications software, recently recognized by Fortune magazine as the fastest growing company in America. At Siebel Systems, Fjeld was most recently CIO and vice president for information technology. Prior to that, he was vice president of information technology at Unisys, a major services and products supplier in the computer industry. Prior to joining TheSupply.com, Dr. Kirtley was vice president of technology for AlliedSignal Electronic Materials, where he invented spin-on glass and created and developed a business based on that material. Kaul was recently vice president of operations, supply chain and six-sigma for Honeywell's electronic materials division. He was instrumental in implementing several new supply chain and lean manufacturing models for the company in both the U.S. and Asia. Fjeldheim also joined TheSupply.com from Siebel Systems, where he served as senior director of information technology and was in charge of the company's entire computing infrastructure. He also was responsible for defining the networking architecture for the Sales.com portal, the leading site for information exchange among sales professionals. "The global market for materials used in semiconductor manufacturing alone is currently $45 billion and predicted to grow to $60 billion in three years," Wild said. "As the only e-business site with a complete supply chain solution tailored to materials used in producing semiconductors and PC boards, TheSupply.com is the 'dot com' pioneer for this market. Our system offers both buyers and suppliers of electronic materials the infrastructure needed to improve their efficiencies and reduce cycle times while enhancing their working relationships with current and potential business partners." TheSupply.com is a business-to-business e-commerce company with a mission to e-link the electronics materials world. Using state-of-the-art systems to create a Net Market, it is the only neutral enterprise focused on automating the supply chains for materials and components used by the semiconductor and PC board industries.
