Girl creates scene asking Dravid to marry her

BANGALORE, Feb 3: Cricketer Rahul Dravid had an embarrassing time for a shortwhile when a young girl threw a tantrum and insisted that he marry her, police said.

The final year BSc student from Secundarabad, identified by police as Mary, came to Dravid’s Indiranagar residence here yesterday, and heckled him, pressing the cricketer to tie the nuptial knot, police said.

Taken aback by the girl’s behaviour, Dravid called the police, who rushed to his house and took the girl into custody.

Police said the girl has been kept in a remand home and would be sent to Secundarabad with her parents, who are expected to arrive here later today.

A police inspector who questioned the girl said the student "did not appear to be in a proper mental condition".

Police denied reports that the girl threatened to commit suicide if Dravid refused to marry her. (PTI)

Favourites India face surprise-package Lebanon

LUCKNOW, Feb 3: Stung by two-year-long displacement from the world group, India start afresh their Davis Cup campaign to reenter the elite group when they take on underdogs Lebanon in the first round of the Asia-Oceania Group I tie here tomorrow.

World’s top doubles player Leander Paes will spearhead India’s challenge in the hosts’ quest to recapture their place of glory and into the 16-team world group for 2001, but the task is surely not as easy as it looks.

The two countries are meeting for the first time in the Davis Cup and an ‘unknown’ factor as mentioned by India’s non-playing captain Ramesh Krishnan will play heavily on the minds of players on both sides.

A win against the West Asian country will put India on the path to their desired goal - but there are two more hurdles to be cleared before the three-time finalist could feel the cushion of world group in the tennis’ world team championship.

With the injury-forced absence of Mahesh Bhupathi, India today played their cards cautiously by fielding Leander Paes and Syed Fazaluddin as their singles players and both pairing in the doubles against the unpredictable but brilliant Lebanese team, who have done well to stay in the Asia-Oceania Group I since 1998 - the year they graduated from Group II. Paes will meet Ali Hamedeh in the first singles on the opening day of the five-match rubber tomorrow with Syed Fazaluddin facing Lebanon number one Hicham Zaatini in the second encounter, according to the draw made here today by International Tennis Federation referee Hiro Yahata of Japan.

Paes and Fazaluddin, a tested combination whenever Bhupathi has been on the sidelines with injury, will clash with the Zaatini-Hamedeh pair in the doubles tie on Saturday and the reverse singles are slated for Sunday.

ITF has made a major change from this year allowing teams to change their players on the third day without having to give any medical reasons.

Even the doubles combination announced on the day of draw could be changed before the start of the play on Saturday, Yahata told PTI here.

Till 1999, teams had to give medical justification before withdrawing their players on the third and final day of the rubber.

A record 136 nations have entered the championships with Lesotho, Mauritius and Namibia as new full-member nations.

Come spring, more than hundred countries across the globe will open their respective campaigns at different levels, and India, in their 64th year, are seeded third in the Asia-Oceania Group I behind Japan and continental champions Uzbekistan.

New Zealand is the fourth seed in the eight-team group with South Korea, China and Thailand being the other contestants. (PTI)

Sachin vs Ganguly vs Jadeja
Agarkar, Kanitkar out; some U-19 players considered

MUMBAI, Feb 3: Former India captain Mohammed Azharuddin and ace wicket-keeper Nayan Mongia were back in contention for the forthcoming series against South Africa after being selected for the Challenger Trophy Tournament to be held in Ahmedabad next week.

Sachin Tendulkar, Saurav Ganguly and Ajay Jadeja will lead the India, India A and India B teams respectively in the day/night tournament to be held from February 10 to 13.

The national selectors met here and decided not to include Ajit Agarkar, Hrishikesh Kanitkar and Devang Gandhi, who were all members of the squad which fared dismally in Australia, along with three other members - M S K Prasad, Harbhajan Singh and Vijay Bharadwaj who had returned earlier after the test series - in any of the three outfits.

S Ramesh, who came back with a fractured thumb after the second test, was the only player omitted fitness grounds, cricket board secretary Jaywant Lele told reporters.

Among those selected were Azharuddin and Mongia who will play under Ganguly, besides Vinod Kambli who will play under Tendulkar.

Also included in the India A and B teams were some members of the under 19 national squad which won the Junior World Cup in Sri Lanka recently, including the triumphant team’s skipper Mohammed Kaif.

Lele said it was mandatory for all the players selected to play in the tournament except on grounds of fitness and the board was awaiting the report of national team physio Andrew Leipus about the fitness of the players who returned from Australia on Tuesday. (PTI)
