TEHRAN, Dec 27: Indian Grandmaster Viswanathan Anand was today crowned 15th world champion by FIDE president Kirsan Ilyumzhinov at a glittering ceremony here tonight. "Anand richly deserves the world champion title," Ilyumzhinov said after handing over the coveted gold medal for the Indians exploits. World number two Anand was a picture of cheer as he received gifts with his usual politeness and panache. He was flooded with Persian carpets and art works at a packed gathering of Indian families and school children. Spains Amexei Shirov, who finished runner-up was a picture of poise when he received silver medal from the FIDE president. Praising the triumphant Indian, Ilyumzhinov said "I think he (Anand) had a fancy for the number 15, that is why he didnt take it before." Irans vice president Hashmi Taba praised Anand for bringing the title to Asia for the first time in the history of the game. In between the speeches were the Choral Orchestra who rendered a fine compositions from Islamic verses giving the closing ceremony a Persian touch. Soon after Anand was awarded the gold medal and the trophy of the 15th world champion, a group of Indian school children sang the Indian national anthem. (PTI) |

Excelsior Sports Correspondent JAMMU, Dec 27: Near 200 Karatekas took part in the two-day long VIth J&K State Karate-do Championship which concluded at M A Stadium, here under the banner of Amateur Karate-Do Association of J&K. Participants from districts of Srinagar, Udhampur, Kathua and Leh took part in the championship. The medal winners among girls were Diksha Sharma, Shivali, Inakshi Jojra, Kritika Wazir, Amrita Singh, Tanveer Kour, Heena Sharma in Kumite events and Shivali Bhardwaj, Sadna Kaith, Shagun Mahajan, Amrita Singh, Tanveer Kour and Sonika Sudan in Kata (forms) events. Among girls, Ronak Singh, Karan, Shiva Baru, Puneet, Sahil Gupta, Zia-ul-Hassan, Sandeep Singh, Pranav Jamwal and Ishaq Hussain in Kumite (sparring) events. Ankit Kachroo, Suhal Gupta, Ronit Bakaya, Rishab Chaku, Ashu Pandita, Zia-ul-Hassan, Pranav Jamwal and Janak Raj in Kata (forms) events. The organising committee was consisted of Sanjeev Dewan, Manoj Mehra, Ayjaz Lone, Suhail Ashra, Naresh Chander and Zuber Siddiquee. Secretary, State Sports Council, Sheikh Fazal Ahmed was chief guest, who distributed prizes among the winners. The tournament was sponsored by the Gulf Oil (India). |
KCC beat Pathankot Club by 31 runs in Peace Trophy Excelsior Sports Correspondent KATHUA, Dec 27: KCC, Jammu defeated Pathankot Cricket Club by 31 runs in the ongoing Peace Cricket Trophy being organised by the District Sports Association, here today. Batting first, KCC scored 193 runs in the allotted 35 overs. Bobby was top scorer with 33 off 33 balls, who later took two wickets for KCC. Later, chasing the total, Pathankot Club lost all the wickets in the 32nd over scoring 162 runs. On the basis of performance, Bobby was declared as man of the match. Prashant Singh and Jagbir Singh officiated the match. Mr Madan Mohan Sharma, EO (TAC), Kathua was special invitee, who also gave away participation trophy to Pathankot team. |

The 51-member executive house also named Sunil Kumar Dogra as chairman and Kewal Prasar as general secretary of the Association. Other members of the body included Jagdish Kumar Dogra, treasurer, Sardari Lal Dubey, vice-chairman and Shiv Kumar Sharma, vice-president, besides Sham Lal Gandotra, Bharat Bhushan and Surinder Khajuria as joint secretaries. |

After the selection of the probables, a 15-day coaching camp will be conducted under the supervision of the State Sports Council, a handout issued by the Association here today said. The championship will be held at Dewas in Madhya Pradesh from January 18 to 23. |
RAF XI beat HSS Nowshera in friendly cricket tie Excelsior Sports Correspondent RAJOURI, Dec 27: The RAF Cricket Club outplayed Higher Secondary School, Nowshera by three runs in a friendly cricket tie organised by National Youth Organisation in memory of Kargil martyrs at Nowshera, here today. Earlier, after winning the toss and batting first RAF XI scored 176 in the allotted 20 overs which HSS Nowshera failed to chase and lost all the wickets just four runs short of the target. Vikas Mehta remained highest scorer with 56 made with the help of five boundaries and three sixes. Deepak Gupta and Rakesh Anand contributed 39 and 37 runs respectively. From HSS, Nowshera Sandeep Bal was the most successful bowler who took three wickets, while Rakesh Choudhary and Vishal Sharma shared two each. Chasing the target of near nine runs per over, HSS, Nowshera made a bad start by losing both the openers with just six runs on the board. And later the whole side was bowled out for 173 runs sparing one over and two balls. For third wicket partnership, Rakesh Choudhary and Sandeep Bal put quick 86 runs together. Sandeep remained the highest scorer with 53, while Rakesh and Krishan Lal contributed 36 and 30 runs respectively. From RAF XI, Romesh Bakshi and Chander Shekhar were the most successful bowers with four wickets each. For his all round performance, Sandeep Bal of HSS, Nowshera was declared as man of the match. Before the match was started, a two minutes silence was observed to pay homage to the Kargil martyrs. Mrs Nirmal Kumari, Principal Higher Secondary School, Nowshera was chief guest of the match, who later gave away prizes to the winners and runners-up. Stadium XI clinch Provincial Women Cricket Championship Excelsior Sports Correspondent JAMMU, Dec 27: A brilliant inning of 73 runs off 77 balls from Cheena Sharma helped Stadium XI inflict a 10-wicket defeat on Government College for Women, Gandhi Nagar in the final and to take away the Provincial Womens Cricket Championship trophy at Green Field ground, here this afternoon. Shweta Slathia too did a great job in the memory victory of Stadium XI. She remained unbeaten on the other end with 48 runs made with the help of four boundaries in her account. Whereas, Cheena, who punished the Gandhi Nagar college girls badly, hit the ball to the fence 13 times. Earlier, Stadium XI won the toss and put Gandhi Nagar College to bat first. In the stipulated quota of 35 overs, Gandhi Nagar College lost all the wickets for 155 runs. Shamshad Akhtar was the main scorer from Gandhi Nagar College, who contributed 30 runs, while Anjali and Anuradha shared 13 and 14 runs respectively. For Stadium XI, Bharati Gupta and Cheena Sharma claimed two wickets each for 23 runs. According the organising secretary of the championship, the prize distribution function will be held later on. The championship was organised by the Jammu and Kashmir Women Cricket Association. |
Basohli residents deputation calls on Health Minister Excelsior Correspondent JAMMU, Dec 27: A deputation of Basohli residents led by Amreesh Sharma, member Provincial Working Committee of National Conference, Basohli called on the Health Minister, Mian Altaf, here. The deputation apprised him of numerous problems being faced by the them pertaining to the Heath Department. The Minister was informed that the Assistant Surgeon posted at SDH Basohli has went on leave soon after he his appointment. Besides this, a number of other specialists doctors should also be sanctioned for Basohli, they demanded. A memorandum was submitted to the Minsiter in this regard by Mr Sharma mentioning the problems and demands of the locals. Minister gave a patient hearing to the deputation and assured that necessary action will be taken in this connection. |
