Vishwanathan Anand rules the world NEW DELHI, Dec 24: World number two Viswanathan Anand, the one man Indian chess revolution, today stamped his authority on the chequered game of 64 squares by clinching the world title with an overwhelming show of dominance over Alexei Shirov of Spain in Tehran. The Indian Grandmaster, who once came close to winning the title before losing to Russias Anatoly Karpov in the Groningen 1998 finals, showed his effervescent form in downing the Latvia-born Spaniard in the six-game World Chess Championship final. Anand, who played unblemishly and had an unbeaten record in the initial five rounds including the semifinals in the capital here, is the only Asian to claim the title. The Indian maestro, popularly known as Vishy, the tiger from Madras has in his collection a plethora of trophies and awards that may rival the best in the world. He was conferred the prestigious International Chess Oscars for two successive years, in 1997 and 1998, in a poll by chess journalists from among 55 countries in the world. The Chess Oscar is given to the star performer of each year and Anand became the first Asian and only non-Russian apart from American wizard Bobby Fischer to receive the award. Interestingly, when it had became clear that Anand was virtually running away with the award while the ballots were being counted, Russian strongman Garry Kasparov posted his agents at the counting venue, but had to finish second. The bronze statue of Chess Oscar was presented to Anand at a glittering ceremony here on the conclusion of Womens World Chess Championship on December 16 by Fide President Kirsan Ilyumzhinov. Anand, who learnt chess at the tender age of six from his mother while in the Philippines, has his assets in the lightening speed with which he plays his moves. He became the youngest national champion at the age of 16 and in 1987 he became the first Asian to win the World Junior Championship and with it also earned the coveted Grandmaster title - again first for an Indian. His climb to the upper echelons was as dramatic as his popularity around the globe. The chubby-faced Indian became everyones darling as he went on climbing the ladders of success. Anand carved a special place on the chessboard by winning the stongest tournament at that time, the Reggio Emillia in Italy in 1991 ahead of Kasparov and Karpov. Kasparov, the strongest chess player of any era with his ELO rating 2800 plus, had by then rebelled from fide and floated his own world championship and invited anand to be his challenger. In the PCA World Chess Championship played at the World Trade Centre in New York in 1995, Anand lost to Kasparov, but not before giving the Russian some tense moments. The Indian, who had made Spain as his home, participated in one of the strongest field at world championship cycles in Lausanne, in Switzerland, and came out unscathed to become challenger to the then defending champion Karpov. In the following finals played in Groningen, a tired Anand fought well but the Russian kept his hold on the title. A fantastic 1998 was followed by an unexpected slump in 1999 giving rise to speculations that Anands career graph was tilting towards the wrong side. But it was not to be. Anand, smarting under antics of Kasparov, who had assured to hold World Championship and put his title up for grabs, returned in 2000 with a vengeance. His best effort before the World Championship was a decisive win at the revived Chess World Cup in Shenyang, China where the field was as strong as that of the worlds. Anand has been awarded many prestigious titles in India including the Arjuna Award, Padmashri (the youngest recipient of the title), the first recipient of the Rijiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award, the Soviet Land Nehru Award. His earlier accomplishments include: Linares Super Torneo in 1998; Melody Amber Tournament in 1994 and 1997; The Credit Suisse Masters in 1997; Dos Hermanas in 1997; Wijk Aan Zee in 1987 and 1998; Torneo De Madrid in 1998, Dortmund Chess in 1996 and 2000 and Tilburg Chess Tournament in 1998. Anand also has the unique distinction of winning six out of eight tournaments participated in 1998. Besides his accomplishments in the classical tournaments, Anand won the strongest rapid championship in Frankfurt in 1998 and 2000. He also has the distinction of beating the strongest chess program, Fritz in Frankfurt 1998 and 1999. Anand has won two editions (1999, 2000) of the prestigious "Advanced Chess" tournaments that take place in Leon, Spain. The players use silicon power to analyse and check positions. In 1999 Anand defeated Karpov 5-1 and in 2000 defeated Judith Polgar and Alexei Shirov to clinch the title. (PTI) |
