New Zealand beat Australia to clinch women’s World Cup

LINCOLN (NEW ZEALAND), Dec 23: New Zealand sprang a surprise defeating title-favourite Australia by four runs in a cliffhanger to clinch the women’s World Cup Cricket Trophy here today.

In a low-scoring match, defending champions Australia failed to cross the 184-run mark of the hosts, managing 180 before the last wicket of Charmaine Mason was well pouched by Kiwi wicketkeeper Rebecca Rolls off Clare Nicholson in the penultimate over.

Australia, off to a disastrous start as the first two wickets fell for as many runs, at one time looked poised to retain the cup when Belinda Clarke, later declared player of the match, played a superb skipper’s knock (91) to coast the team to 155 for six.

The wicket of Clarke, clean bowled by Nicholson, proved to be the turning point of the edge-of-the-seat thriller as the Kiwi bowlers wreaked havoc with some accurate bowling and restricted the Australians from getting required runs, despite having enough overs in hand.

Two-wicket haul apiece by K Keenan (2/19), R J Pullar (2/35) and Nicholson (2/38), complimented by solid fielding finally won the coveted trophy for the Kiwis.

Earlier, Rebecca Rolls, 34 with 6 fours and K Ramel, 41 off 63 balls including three fours, ensured New Zealand put up a respectable total before being bowled out off 48.4 overs. (AGENCIES)

King Commission inquiry delayed

DURBAN, Dec 23: Disgraced former South African cricket captain, Hansie Cronje, has won a High Court order to delay the resumption of the King Commission’s inquiry into match-fixing slated for January 25.

The order against the King Commission was granted by the Cape Town High Court yesterday.

The initial round of public hearings was adjourned in June and the resumption of the examination has repeatedly been delayed.

Slapped with the High Court order, the one-man Edwin King Commission will now resume its inquiry on February 19.

The resumption of hearings by the Commission was scheduled for January 25, but Cronje’s lawyers expressed their inability to be present on the day and sought legal remedy after their request for a postponement of the examination was refused by the Commission.

Justice Thembahile Jali also ordered the Commission to pay Cronje’s expenses.

The court said United Cricket Board chief Dr Ali Bacher would be called as a witness in the scheduled hearings and it was cronje’s constitutional right to be represented by his lawyers during the examination.

Cronje had confessed to accepting money from book-makers for providing match information earlier this year, marking the darkest hour of the game and triggering a world-wide controversy.

Cronje is appealing against the life ban imposed on him by the South African cricket authorities. (PTI)

Match fixing scandal overshadows sporting feats

NEW DELHI, Dec 23: The country’s most popular sport cricket was sullied by the match-fixing scandal in 2000, an year which was disappointing otherwise too.

Heroes like former Indian captain Mohammed Azharuddin and Ajay Jadeja were transformed into villains as the match-fixing saga cast its shadow on the nation’s sporting scenario, overshadowing few creditable on-field performances of sportspersons in another frustrating year.

Under tremendous pressure from the Government and bowing to public sentiment, the Cricket Board slapped a life ban on Azharuddin and Ajay Sharma and imposed five-year bans on Ajay Jadeja and Manoj Prabhakar and former physiotherapist Ali Irani to put an end to the burning issue but cricket will never be the same again in the country.

Barring 25-year old Karnam Malleswari’s heart-warming bronze medal in the Sydney olympics and super grandmaster Viswanathan Anand’s entry into the final of the World Chess Championship, Indian sports continued to languish in the depths of mediocrity.

Amidst the match-fixing scandal, a new look Indian team under captain Sourav Ganguly had mixed fortunes as it sought to make amends for a string of disasters early in the season being drubbed by Australia and South Africa in tests.

Youngsters like Yuvraj Singh, Zaheer Khan and Hemang Badani were a revelation as the young team toppled giants like Australia and South Africa to reout in Kenya before being tamed by the Kiwis. But inconsistency continued to plague the team which has seldom done justice to its true potential.

Maestro Sachin Tendulkar’s decision to relinquish the Indian captaincy, the unfortunate split of the dream doubles team of Leander Paes and Mahesh Bhupathi and their subsequent re-unification, Jyoti Randhawa’s title triumph in the Indian Open golf and the Indian under-19 cricket team winning the youth World Cup were some of the other important developments during the year.

Match-fixing remained the most important subject of the year forcing the cricketers and administrators to face a crisis which has shaken the very foundation of the game. With a number of international players also being named by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), it could just be the tip of the iceberg.

The cricket degeneration had begun a long time ago and the obnoxious nexus between the players and bookies may never have come to light but for an alert Delhi police sub-inspector who stumbled upon a conversation which changed the face of the game.

Delhi police unearthed the scandal in early April and filed an FIR naming former South African skipper Hansie Cronje, three of his teammates and two bookies.

As unsubstantiated allegations and counter allegations between players and officials tarnished the imagernment ordered a CBI probe into the match-fixing case in India.

CBI interrogated a number of players and officials before submitting its interim report to the Government on October 30. The report named Azharuddin, Ajay Sharma, Jadeja, Prabhakar and Mongia for being involved in match-fixing. (PTI)

DUBAI, Dec 23: Former Indian captain Dilip Vengsarkar has started coaching budding cricketers in the United Arab Emirates (UAE).
