Azhar yet to decide on moving court

HYDERABAD, Dec 17: Former Indian captain Mohammad Azharuddin, who was slapped with a life ban by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), is yet to decide on moving court to challenge its decision.

Disclosing this to UNI, former Union Law Minister H R Bharadwaj, who has been tendering legal advice to the tainted cricketer in the wake of the matchfixing scandal, said, "I have been counselling Azharuddin from the time he was named one of the main players involved in fixing matches."

He claimed that Azhar, who was initially reluctant to appear before BCCI’s anti-corruption commissioner K Madhavan, relented only after he advised him to do so.

Bharadwaj said Azhar sought his opinion after disgraced former South African skipper Hansie Cronje mentioned his name before the King Commission.

Azhar, who is fasting during the month of Ramzan, has made himself incommunicado to the media. However, on Friday, he attended a dinner party hosted at a star hotel in connection with the "homecoming" of Miss Asia Pacific Diya Mizra, and also posed for photographs.

Bhardwaj said he was unaware if the BCCI had served a notice to the former captain. "At this point, I have not got any feedback from Azharuddin," he added.

Meanwhile, BCCI secretary J Y Lele confirmed to UNI from Baroda that notices had been couriered five days ago to all the tainted cricketers - Mohammad Azharuddin and Ajay Sharma, both banned for life and Ajay Jadeja and former all rounder Manoj Prabhakar, who face a five-year ban.

However, he said he did not know if they had received the notices.

Asked about the plans of some tainted cricketers to move court challenging the board’s decision, he said, "it is up to them to do what they want".

Recently, Ajay Jadeja told newspersons in New Delhi that he would go to court challenging the BCCI decision. (UNI)

MacGill investigated after Sarwan collision

ADELAIDE (Australia), Dec 17: Australian leg-spinner Stuart MacGill was investigated by English match referee Alan Smith after colliding with West Indies 12th man Ramnaresh Sarwan during the third test at Adelaide Oval today.

An Australian Cricket Board spokesman said stand-in captain Adam Gilchrist and team manager Steve Bernard also attended the meeting held immediately after the close of play on the third day.

The spokesman said Smith had refused to disclose any details of the meeting but would release a statement tomorrow after deciding whether any further action would be taken.

Macgill, who has been reprimanded in the past for his on-field behaviour, appeared to barge into Sarwan as they crossed at the player’s entrance.

Macgill was furious at being given out by umpire Steve Davis to a ball that television replays suggested had clipped his helmet on the way through to Jacobs and stormed off the field.

Neither the Australian or West Indies camps would comment on the matter.(REUTERS)

India crash to second successive defeat

NEW DELHI, Dec 17: Indian girls lost their second successive match, against Japan 35-84 today, as the hosts continued with their miserable run after losing their tournament opener to North Korea yesterday in the 15th Asian Junior Women Basketball Championship.

In other matches of the day, China beat Sri Lanka 128-29, for their second straight victory while North Korea too notched up another win when they comprehensively beat Malaysia 77-48 in group a ties.

In today’s Group B matches too East Asian superpowers continued with their winning streak as the runners-up of the last championship, Chinese Taipei, conquered Thailand 71-51 and South Korea easily overcame Uzbekistan 107-46.

Despite a noticeble improvement in their game over the first match and a not-very-brilliant show by the Japanese, Indian girls failed to capitalise on numerous opportunities they got to score, going down in the first half 23-39.

India’s undoing proved to be its feckless defence, conceding too many easy incursions to the more agile Japanese girls due to poor marking.

India’s defence was appalling in the second half in which they conceded 45 points scoring just 12, as it proved a cakewalk for the Japanese, who eventually took the match 84-35. (PTI)

McKenzie sets up South African win

EAST LONDON (South Africa), Dec 17: Neil McKenzie hit a maiden limited overs international century as South Africa hammered Sri Lanka by 95 runs in the second match of a six-game series at Buffalo park today.

Mckenzie’s 120 not out enabled his team to overcome a poor start and take advantage of ideal batting conditions. South Africa’s total of 302 for seven was the highest in an international match at Buffalo Park.

Sri Lanka made 207 for six in reply and were never on target, especially after hard-hitting opening batsmen Romesh Kaluwitharana and captain Sanath Jayasuriya were dismissed in the first five overs by South African captain Shaun Pollock.

It was South Africa’s seventh successive one-day win and put them 2-0 up in the series.

Marvan Atapattu and Mahela Jayawardene put on 63 for the third wicket before Atapattu was caught behind off Makhaya Ntini for 36. Jayawardene went on to make top score of 59.

With the match effectively decided, Russel Arnold and Chaminda Vaas shared an unbeaten seventh wicket stand of 60, evidently opting for batting practice ahead of the first two test matches which precede the resumption of the one-dayers.

Mckenzie, 25, hit 13 fours and a six in a 141-ball innings as he grabbed his opportunity after missing selection for the first match, which South Africa won by four wickets in Port Elizabeth on Friday.

South Africa lost both openers cheaply, with Andrew Hall trapped lbw first ball by Vaas and Gary Kirsten caught off his gloves at slip for six when Nuwan Zoysa made a ball bounce steeply.

Jacques Kallis and McKenzie steadied the innings before Kallis was caught at cover for 35. McKenzie was dropped soon afterwards with his own score on 35 when he swept offspinner Muttiah Muralitharan to Upul Chandana at square leg.

It proved a costly error as South Africa then took control.

Sri Lankan captain Jayasuriya said he was disappointed with his side’s fielding.

Mckenzie and Jonty Rhodes put on 88 for the fourth wicket, with Rhodes racing to his second successive half-century, making 50 off 51 balls. Rhodes was playing in his 189th one-day international, a new record for South Africa.

Mark Boucher then played aggressively to hit 55 off 48 balls as he helped McKenzie add 100 off 87 balls for the fifth wicket. Boucher was dropped twice off Muralitharan as he went for his shots before skying the offspinner to extra cover one ball after reaching his half-century with a sweep for six.

Mckenzie, playing in his 19th one-day international, passed his previous highest score of 58 and went on to reach his century off 129 balls when he pulled Zoysa to the midwicket boundary.

Mckenzie, who made a maiden test century against New Zealand in Port Elizabeth earlier this month, replaced Boeta Dippenaar from the side that played in the first one-day international. South Africa again did not pick fast bowler Allan Donald, who is recovering from a stomach muscle injury.

Sri Lanka also made one change, with legspinner Chandana replacing batsman Tillekeratne Dilshan. (AFP)

At 88 Ram Murti wins two medals in Asians

Excelsior Sports Correspondent

JAMMU, Dec 17: Believe it or not, but it is a fact that an old man from Jammu and Kashmir has once again proved his mettle by keeping the Indian flag atop by winning two medals in the 11th Asian Veterans Athletic Championship which were held at Bangalore recently.

Ram Murti Kalia—a known figure in State sports, who is proud to be a Jammuite, has won two bronze medals in the five kilometer walk and 100 meters race events. "I would have won the third one in ten kilometer race too, had the Railways, the department I have served as Station Master, provided me reservation to travel from Delhi to Bangalore", said the old man in an exclusive interview to EXCELSIOR.

Popularly know as ‘Youngman’ in his nineties, Ram Murti was quite unhappy with the State Sports Council, State Athletic Association and the Minister for Sports for their ‘hoax assurance’ of honouring him.

‘I have won 27 medals in various national and international meets in my career as veteran athlete during the last 11 years and I am still in a position to add many more", he disclosed with pride.

Ram Murti had made his entry in the veteran athletic after his retirement in 1971. His first national level competition was in Haryana in 1989, where he won a gold in 20 kilometers walk and silver in 10 kilometers walk.

Thereafter, he continued his winning spree for Jammu and Kashmir. Now, he has a bag full of medals and certificates which he said is his real earning in his life.

Kalia was also selected for the international events at Toranto, Jakarta, Ukrain, USA, South Darban and in Africa. But due to lack of support and interest by the State Government he could not participate.

However, he had a name to be given special mention for extending financial help. "In my 11 years career, only one person has extended helping hand and he is Ramesh Chander Gupta, former president Chamber of Commerce and Industries", he said and adding that Gupta had sponsored him for an international event, but due to non-cooperation at Delhi, could not attend that meet and subsequently the sponsorship was returned.

When asked about his diet, Ram Murti disclosed that, "my daily diet includes one and half kilogram pure Milk, half kg Curd, 250 grams handmade butter or pure desi ghee, besides almonds, ‘channa’ and jaggery (Gur) I avoid tea, but am very much fond of lassi, which I am unable to take regularly". He concluded with the words that, "the reason behind my fitness is regular walk of ten kilometers in the morning and evening.
