Hurriyat offers talks with Centre

Atal Bihari VajpayeeSRINAGAR, Dec 17: The Hurriyat Conference, a conglomerate of 23 separatist outfits, today formally welcomed the Ramzan ceasefire announced by Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee and offered talks with the Centre at a stormy meeting of its executive followed by violent factional feud. A Hurriyat spokesman said after the meeting that the seven-member highest decision-making forum of the organisation, discussed "the situation arising out of the unilateral ceasefire and unanimously reiterated its stand that Hurriyat will take part in any meaningful and result-oriented political process aimed at resolving the Kashmir issue permanently."As Hurriyat leaders came out of the executive meeting, supporters of their respective parties raised slogans while escorting their leaders outside. .......more

JAMMU, Dec 17: A day after the killing of two hardcore militants including Hizbul Mujahideen’s ‘district commander’ Gazi, troops of Rashtriya Rifles and Special Task Force (STF) today eliminated two more militants at village Mandol Beri in Marmat area of Doda district. One of the slain militant Abu Zunair was earlier a close associate of Hizbul Mujahideen’s slain ‘commander’ Shakeel Ansari. SSP Doda Ashkoor Wani told EXCELSIOR on telephone from Doda this evening that a group of militants ambushed a joint patrol party of 10 Rashtriya Rifles and STF at Mandol Beri in Marmat area at 12 noon when the jawans were on a routine patrolling of the area. .....more
