Qualitative
improvement on border after
ceasefire
DEVLALI
(MAHARASHTRA), Dec 8: There is a
qualitative improvement in
the situation across the border following
declaration of unilateral ceasefire in
Jammu and Kashmir, Army Chief, General S
Padmanabhan today said. Guns
are silent after a long time on the
border and there is minimal firing
now, Padmanabhan, who attended the
tenth reunion of the regiment of
artillery here, told reporters. Earlier,
tens and thousands rounds were fired in
the Valley but now it has been
considerably reduced following the
month-long Ramzan initiative of the
Centre, the Army chief said. To a query,
he ruled out that Army had become
vulnerable following the unilateral truce

Gowda slam PM for his remarks
on
Ayodhya issue

DELHI, Dec 8: Two former Prime
Ministers V P Singh and H D Deve Gowda
today criticised Prime Minister Atal
Behari Vajpayee for his remarks on
construction of temple at Ayodhya and
described it as a "calculated
move" to divert focus from economic
issues and derive political mileage in
Uttar Pradesh elections. Singh told
reporters that Vajpayee made the remarks
as part of "diversionary
tactics" to escape opposition attack
on Governments economic policies
particularly on the agriculture front as
a number of farmers were facing
starvation and had even committed
suicide. He said the Prime Minister spoke
his heart out by saying that construction
of temple at Ayodhya was an expression of
national sentiment which was yet to be
