Bangladesh invites India to play first test DHAKA, Aug 24: India has been invited to play with Bangladesh in their maiden test in coming November, Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) president, Saber Hossain Chowdhury said today. "We have invited India to play the historic first test and we hope we will know their reply within the next three or four days", Chowdhury said. Bangladesh were planning to play with England earlier but the proposal failed to materialise after England said it was unable to fit the tour in its schedule in November. Expressing disappointment for not being able to play their first test against England, the BCB chief said, "since England is the oldest test playing nation and Bangladesh the youngest one, BCB initially invited England to play the first test". But England were interested in playing in December after their Pakistan tour which did not suit the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) as the holy month of Ramzan falls in December this year. "It will be Ramzan and we dont want to play the west during Ramzan". Chowdhury said. Chowdhury also disclosed that Bangladesh is likely to appear in two four-day and three limited overs matches against the provincial sides in South Africa after the ICC knock-out tournament in Kenya. Bangladesh was granted test status in the Annual General Meeting of the ICC in June this year in London. (PTI) |

WTA Pilot Pen NEW HAVEN (Connecticut), Aug 24: Second seed Monica Seles eased into the semifinals of the $535,000 WTA Pilot Pen here by ousting Belgian sixth seed Dominique Van Roost 6-1 6-2. The only other match completed before rain washed out play for the day saw Patty Schnyder recover from the brink of defeat to overcome Russias Elena Dementieva 1-6 7-5 6-3 in a second-round encounter. Seles repeated the score of her only previous meeting with Van Roost, in the 1996 Sydney Tournament. Although Van Roost began by competing well in the rallies and showed more versatility in her game, her groundstrokes lacked the accuracy and consistency of Seles. The American also hit with more power and found better angles, and it was that which enabled her to pull Van Roost wide and force a backhand error to earn a break for 3-1. A weak backhand error from the Belgian then gave seles a second break for 5-1 and she wrapped up the opening set in just 26 minutes. In the second set, Van Roosts third double-fault gave Seles a break for 2-1, and her game collapsed. She conceded 16 consecutive points as Seles built a 5-1 lead, and only a late fightback prevented a complete loss of face. She saved a match point at 5-1, and then held her only break point against Seles in the next game. Seles saved that and went on to claim a 55-minute victory. "Throughout the match I was very focused today. I knew I didnt want to let her too much into the match, because she can play pretty good tennis," said Seles. Although it appeared van roost had given up after losing her serve early in the second set, Seles believed that was misleading. "She goes for it, and I think sometimes from the outside it looks like her shot doesnt make sense. Shes a streaky player, because she goes for so much that the margins are pretty low. Shes going to hit an amazing angle, or miss it," said Seles. "It really helped when I broke her though. She started missing quite a few shots after that." Schnyder was overwhelmed by Dementieva in the first set, and after twice breaking serve in the second set, only to have the Russian break back each time, Schnyder broke again to lead 6-5. She was almost denied again, but saved a break point and took the set, and then won the final four games of the match in the third to set up a quarter-final meeting with top seed Venus Williams. "She started so fast and was hitting winners with her forehand," Schnyder said. "But in the second set I made her play more balls and was moving better, and I hit some really good winners at the end of the second set. In the third I was able to hold serve easier than her and I had more confidence and was able to dominate the rallies." (AFP) |

It was for the first time that any State Department has made such kind of efforts to identify the hidden talent, to give them proper coaching and then explore their talent in the national meet by winning medals. The coming January-2001 meet is not the first one wherein J&K Forest Department is taking part, but it will be the third consecutive year when J&K will field its squads in different events. In the earlier two competitions, the Department has won a number of medals for the state. In 1998, the state won gold in Bridge, two silvers in Table Tennis and one bronze in the Athletics. To continue with the old medal winning tradition and add more medals, the Forest Minister is making extra efforts to bring atleast a medal in every event in the coming meet. To get the good stuff, the Minister this year has flashed the message to all corners of the state and sportspersons serving at any position in the department have been asked to come forward for the trials. Different zones have been created all over the state to hold competitions to identify the talent in the events of Table Tennis, Badminton, Swimming, Bridge, Cricket, Kabaddi, Volleyball, Athletics, Football, etc. Similar internal competitions are being held in the MA Stadium by the Department. And to have the first hand assessment, the Minister today paid a visit to the different sports fields in the MA Stadium and Indoor complex. During his visit, the Minister had a chat with EXCELSIOR.
