Millenniums I-Day celebrated amidst tight security Excelsior Correspondent JAMMU, Aug 15: The first Independence Day of the new millennium was celebrated with great enthusiasm and gaiety in Jammu region amidst tightest ever security arrangements. At Udhampur the main function was held at Degree College ground where the Minister for Information and Transport, Mr Ajatshatru Singh unfurled the national flag and took salute at an impressive march-past presented by the contingents of J&K Police, NCC cadets, students and bands schools and police. A strong gathering of 10,000 people including Legislators, civil and Army officers and prominent citizens attended the function. Speaking on the occasion, the Minister recalled the sacrifices made by freedom fighters in liberating the country from foreign yolk. He said freedom was achieved after the long struggle of leaders like Mahatma Gandhi, Pt Jawaharlal Nehru, Bhagat Singh, Ashfaq Ullah Khan, Subhash Chander Bose. He asked the people to preserve this hard earned freedom by maintaining communal amity and secularism in the country. He said Pak sponsored militants are bent upon disturbing our peaceful atmosphere of co-existence by launching proxy war against us in the State. Referring to barbaric acts of militants of killing Shri Amarnath yatries, labourers and media persons, he said, this ampty demonstrate their frustrations. Mr Ajatshatru Singh said the present Government headed by Dr Farooq Abdullah is fully committed to restore normalcy and give spurt to the socio-economic developmental activities. He said despite financial constraints, Rs 197 crore were spent on development activities in Udhampur district during last three years. The Minister said some misguided youth have now started realising futility of the militancy and are coming forward for peace talks with the Centre which was a healthy trend. "All those who have forgotton their path should join the national mainstream and contribute their mite in normalization of the situation and speedy progress of the State," he appealed. A colourful cultural bonanza comprising national songs, skits and folk dances was presented by the school children, which was highly appreciated by the audience. The Minister also distributed prizes to six officials and students who excelled in various fields. The Independence Day was also celebrated at tehsil and Niabat headquarters with national fervour. At Reasi, the SDM unfurled the national flag and took salute at the march-past. At Katra, the national flag was hoisted by the SDM at the premises of Government Higher Secondary School. Tehsildar, Ramnagar hoisted the national flag at Govt Higher Secondary School, Ramnagar. The Day was also celebrated at Mahore, Chenani, Gool, Majalta, Batal Balian, Sudhmahadev and Kotli Bagh. Cultural programmes were also presented by the respective school children. Independence Day functions were also held at all district and tehsil headquarters of Jammu division. RAJOURI At Rajouri, the national flag was hoisted by the Minister for Health and Medical Education, Mian Altaf Ahmed who took salute at the ceremonial parade. The contingents of Army, CRPF, JKAP, State police, Auxiliary, Forest Protection Force, NCC, Bharat Scouts and Guides and school children participated in the march-past. Addressing a strong gathering of over 6000 on the occasion, the Minister complimented the people of border area for maintaining the age old traditions of patriotism, and brotherhood. He appealed the misguided youth to shun the gun culture and join the national mainstream. He said that our country always believed in socialism, secularism and democracy and we are proud of being the citizens of the worlds greatest democracy. Mian Altaf lauded the role of Army for guarding our borders despite odd situation as well as their active involvement in the public welfare programmes. Referring to the multi-dimensional development in various sectors, the Minister outlined the future plans of the Government in raising the socio-economic status of the people especially those living in border and rural areas. He said the Government headed by Dr Farooq Abdullah was committed to provide all amenities of life to the people. He said that closed schools are being made functional with introduction of Village Level Committees concept. He said efforts to create congenial atmosphere for tourism development resulted in many-fold increase in the pilgrims visiting the holy shrine of Lord Amarnath Ji this year. The Minister said that Medical institutions are being equipped with modern infrastructure and latest machinery for providing better health care to the people of the State. The Minister gave away cash prizes and the citations to the students of BA, 12th and 10th classes who excelled in the examinations during the last academic session in the district. He also distributed the mementoes and citations to three physical education teachers/masters of the district for their distinguished services to the department. A cultural programme was also presented on the occasion by school childen. Independence Day functions were also celebrated at Nowshera, Sunderbani, Kalakote, Darhal, Budhal, Koternaka, Dharamsal, Thannamandi, Keri and Manjakote. KATHUA At Kathua, the Minister for Tourism, Youth Services and Sports, Mr Surjeet Singh Slathia hoisted the national flag and took salute of the march-past comprising contingents of District Police, Police Training School, CRPF, SSB, Forest Protection Force, NCC and students of various Government and private schools. Bands of Army and three schools also took part in the parade. A cultural programme was also presented on the occasion. Addressing the gathering, Mr Slathia paid glowing tributes to valient soldiers who made supreme sacrifices for national solidarity and integration. He asked the people to unitedly fight the machinations of Pakistan who has been indulging in proxy war against India in Kashmir. Listing the achievements of the State Government, he said in the Education sector, there are 1000 primary, 3600 middle, 2000 high and 272 higher secondary schools are providing education. Similarly, achievements in different sectors of development have been made during the last four years. The Minister distributed ex-gratia relief of Rs one lakh to war disabled hero of 1965, Mr Ram Singh of village Jasrota and Rs 50,000 to Mrs Vishno Devi W/o late Rifleman Nand Kishore of Jasrota. At Bani the Deputy Speaker, Legislative Assembly, Malik Ghulam Haider unfurled the National Flag and took salute at the march past presented by the school children. The Deputy Speaker gave away prizes on the occasion, school children also presented a variety cultural programme. Reports of Independence Day celebrations were also received from Hiranagar, Billawar, Basohli and Bani. Poonch At Poonch, the main function was held in Boys Higher Secondary School ground where the Minister of State for Food and Supplies, Mr Ajay Sadhotra unfurled the national flag and took salute on march-past by contingents drawn from Police, JKAP, CRPF, Auxiliary Police, college and school boys and girls and Army band. A strong gathering of about 5000 from all walks of life and prominent citizens including MLA Haveli, Mr GM Jan, MLC, Mr Ikhlaq Khan and Army officers witnessed the impressive parade. Speaking on the occasion, Mr Sadhotra felicitated the people of Poonch. He recalled the sacrifices made for achieving freedom by our national heroes. We are proud of it that we are an atomic power nation at present and are striving to achieve more progress in all aspects of life. Although our neighbourer Pakistan is bent upon to create disturbance in our State but we have pledged to fight it tooth and nail and we shall wait no more in giving befitting defeat to the enemy. He appealed the people to cooperate with security forces in restoring peace and tranquility. He assured the people of providing them all amenities of life despite financial constraints. The Minister recalled the services of people of Poonch who rendered in giving defeat to enemy in 1965, 1971 and appealed to step forward with similar courage. Sodhi, Hak awarded Fire Services Medal Excelsior Correspondent JAMMU, Aug 15: Mr R S Sodhi, Joint Director Fire Services Jammu Range has been awarded Presidents Fire Services Medal for his meritorious, services, on Independence Day. Born in 1958, Mr Sodhi graduated from Kashmir University in Science faculty and then completed (B.E.) Fire Engineering through Nagpur University. He joined J&K Fire Services Department as Assistant Director through J&K Public Services Commission in the year 1985. His technical credentials led him to attain high professionalism from prestigious institutes out side the country like Japan, Hong Kong etc. For his excellent services and gallant act he has already received Presidents Fire Services Medal for gallantry in 1995, during historical Charar-e-Sharief conflaguration. He functioned in various capacities ranging from Asstt Director Fire Services Command Srinagar, Sopore, Anantnag, Central Stores, Regional Workshop and Trainings till he was promoted as Dy Director Fire Services. He was again promoted in the year 1998 as Joint Director Fire Services and was posted as provincial officer in Jammu Range. He is still holding the charge of same post. Mr RK Hak, Asstt Director/Staff Officer to Addl Director General Fire Services and Prisons has also been awarded Presidents Fire Services Medal for his meritorious service. Mr Hak joined Fire Services in the year 1985 as Asstt Director and has worked for different posts like Asstt Director for Workshop, Rajouri, Jammu and Srinagar. |

The main attraction of this year celebration of the Independence Day was the participation of the Band party of Ladakh Scouts, Maha Bodhi School, JK Police and other institutions. Addressing a huge public gathering of more than ten thousand, Kushok Togdan has felicitated the people of Ladakh for maintaining communal harmony and brotherhood at all crucial occasion. He said, that on this particular day before 53 years age India achieved a Independent due to great sacrifice rendered by our beloved elders and leaders under the leadership of Mahatma Gandhi. Independence Day celebrated at J&K House, New Delhi Excelsior Correspondent NEW DELHI, Aug 15: On the occasion of Independence Day celebrations the National flag was unfurled in the premises of J&K House here today. While addressing the audience, the Resident Commissioner, Mr Pankaj Jain said it was due to efforts of our great leaders that the shackles of the British rule were broken and we were able to achieve Independence. He said, that we should work hard for the development of the country and keep strict vigil against the forces which are bent upon to create disturbances in the country specially in our State in order to weaken it. We should also be vigilant against the evil designs of our neighbour who is exporting cross border terrorism with the intention to destroy the unity and integrity of the nation, so that the hard won freedom is lost. He also emphasised that it not enough to have gained political freedom 50 years back. Equally important was economic freedom where we are not unduly dependent on economic aid from foreign countries and do not unduly come under their pressure on issues where we should take an independent view. Social freedom, right 2nd equality was equally importnat and to be nurtured and preserved. The poor in Indian in accordance withthe spirit of the constitution must enjoy the same and equal social and economic rights and should be able to apply and aspire for the highest office in India. Then only we can say in India are totally free from any bondage. We need to curtail favouritism and nepotism in every sphere and ensure equal freedom to all. The function was attended in large number by the children of the employees of J&K House. The children sang patriotic songs and presented a cultural items. Light refreshment was also served on the said occasion. Earlier, a guard of honour was also presented to the Resident Commissioner by the contingent of J&K Police. DOT takes several incentives for Jammu, Kathua districts Excelsior Correspondent JAMMU, Aug 15: On the auspicious occasion of 54th Independence Day, Jammu Telecom District has taken number of initiatives for the developemnt of Telecom services and facilities in the revenue districts of Jammu and Kathua falling under its jurisdiction. As a part of these initiatives, a 2000 lines Electronic Digital OCB RSU type exchange was commissioned here today at Shakti Nagar. The inaugural call was made by Chief Genral Manager Telecommunications, J&K Circle Mr Ramesh Lalwani to General Manager Telecom, District Jammu Mr R K Upadhyay. Commissioning of this exchange will facilitate area transfers from Jammu Exchange thereby rendering numbers spares in that Exchange. The capacity rendered spare shall be utilised for clearing the Waiting List of resultant Jammu Exchange. Kootah Exchange in district Kathua and Jourian Exchange in district Jammu were expanded by 128 lines each today. STD facility to Kootah exchange is also being extended subsequent to this expansion. It may be mentioned here that Jourian exchange is already connected to National Network by Optical Fiber Communication (OFC) system whereas Kootah exchange has been brought on OFC today. Virtual Card Calling (VCC) facility which has earlier available to Exchange of SDCA Jammu only has now also been extended for exchange belonging to adjacent SDCA Udhampur, Samba and Akhnoor from today. As such VCC cards purchased at Jammu can also be used in the above mentioned areas. Parmandal, the only block headquarter of Jammu district which was hitherto without telecommunication facility has now been provided with Satellite based Village Public Telephone (VPT) in the Post Office, Parmandal from today. People of this area can avail telecommunication facility through this VPT. To improve customer services an "In-House Call Centre" has been established recently at Jammu. Customers can obtained information about their pending bills, new connection release position, shifting applications position etc. by calling Telephone Number 571711 of the said Call Centre on any working day between 1030 hrs to 1530 hrs. In view of large scale changes in telephone numbers due to technical reasons, Jammu Telecom. District is bringing out a "Supplementary Telephone Directory" corrected upto 31.08.2000. This is likely to be available by October, 2000. |

JAKFAS painting camp Excelsior Special Correspondent JAMMU, Aug 15: " Peace for Jammu and Kashmir " was theme of a special painting camp organised by the J&K Fine Arts Society (JAKFAS) on the occasion of 54th Independence Day here today. Leading young artists took part in it and prepared their art works depicting the yearnings of the masses for peace in the trouble-torn Jammu and Kashmir State. Mr Suresh Sharma, general secretary of J&K Fine Arts Society, told EXCELSIOR that the objective of the camp was to highlight the inner urge of the militancy-hit people for peace through the medium of colours and brush. The superb paintings done by the artists portrayed on the canvas beautifully the theme of peace and harmony. Mr Sharma asserted " the JAKFAS artists dip their brushes in their own souls to depict it on canvas". And during the camp, the artists are doing exactly this thing and expressing strong urge for peace in Jammu and Kashmir. One oil painting depicted the silent and sad nature as well as a grey-haired man " disturbed" at the prevailing violence sponsored from across the border. Another art piece done today` spoke about desolation over the death and destruction in the State but with a ray of hope for return of tranquilty. Another painting highlighted the traditional communal amity prevailing in this part of the country. By and large these art pieces eloquently speak about urgent need for peace and progress. The general secretary, JAKFAS stated that these paintings will be put on for public exhibition latter on, may be on Gandhi Jayanti Day. The talented artists who participated in the day-long painting session included: Messrs Suresh Sharma, Ajay Gupta, Vinay Khajuria, Rohit Verma, Sham Lal Sharma, Sarvesh Sharma, Chander Shekhar, Kamal Sharma, Om Parkash Buria and Parveen Singh. The J&K Fine Art Society, a group of contemporary artists, is engaged in promotion of fine art of painting among the people. According to a press release issued by a local BJP leader, a local lady today spotted three militants roaming the village. She immediately informed the VDC members who immediately rushed to the spot and found militants hiding a religious place. They attacked the militants but militants managed to escape due to the darkness. |

Trade bodies celebrate I-Day with patriotic fervor Excelsior Correspondent JAMMU, Aug 15: Various trade bodies celebrated the 54th Independence Day with great enthusiasm and gaiety. On the occasion of 54th Independence Day, Mr Ram Sahai, president Chamber of Commerce and Industry inaugurated the new chowk at Marble Market and named it as Bharat Chowk. Hoisting the National Flag in the chowk, Mr Sahai lauded the efforts of the office bearers and members of Marble Market in making the beautiful chowk completely studded with marble and granites. Yatra ends with arrival of holy Excelsior Correspondent JAMMU, Aug 15: The month-long Amarnath pilgrimage culminated this morning with the arrival of Charri Mubarak (the holy mace of Lord Shiva) and prayers in the cave shrine in the Himalayan range of South Kashmir. Devotees and Sadhus, accompanying the mace, chanted incantations and Bhajans to invoke the blessings of Lord Shiva, officials said here. Over 1.77 lakh pilgrims, including women and children, from different parts of the country, trekked to the cave located at 3952 metres via mountainous and forest routes of Baltal and Pahalgam. Despite continued inclement weather along yatra routes and militants attack on yatris early this month near Pahalgam, the pilgrimage-which started on July 13-received a good response. A record number of 1,77,518 pilgrims visited the cave shrine this year, surpassing last years record of 1.07 lakh travellers. Reports said that while most of the pilgrims have already reached their respective destinations, others were on way back to base camps of Pahalgam and Baltal. Charri-Mubarak, which was led by Mahant Dipender Giri of Dashnami Akhara in Srinagar would return to Pahalgam and then to Srinagar. Reports from Poonch district said that hundreds of devotees also paid their obesiance at Budda Amarnath Temple in Rajpura-Mandi area, near the Line of Control (LoC). The annual Baba Budda Amarnath yatra started from Poonch on August 13 with the warm send off to the holy mace of Shiva after worshipping ceremony, the reports said, adding the mace will be kept in the temple for Darshan till this evening and then brought back to Poonch town. Thousands of devotees also offered prayers today in temples at Shiv Khori, Sudhmahadev, Billawar and winter capital of Jammu division in connection with Shravana Purnamashi, coinciding with Raksha Bandhan. |
I-Day function held at Police Academy Udhampur Excelsior Correspondent JAMMU, Aug. 15: Independence Day was celebrated with enthusiasm and gaiety in Sher-I-Kashmir Police Academy Udhampur. A colourful function was organised and Director SK Police Academy Udhampur Masud Choudhary, IGP unfurled the National Flag. In his address Masud Choudhary recounted the sacrifices made by numerous countrymen for achieving the Independence. They gave their 'today for our tomorrow.' We must pay tributes to them, he said. He told that the role of police is very vital in every society since no development can take place without maintenance of peace and order. This is all the more relevant in our State due to prevalent security scenario, he said. The main function at Jammu was held in the Mini Stadium Parade Ground. The Minister for Education, Mr Mohd Shafi unfurled the national flag and took salute at an impressive march-past comprising contingents of JAKE, District Police, IRP Lady Police, Auxiliary Police, JK Fire Service, Forest Protection Force, NCC cadets, Boys and girls of various educational institutions. Speaking on the occasion, the Minister extended his heart felt greetings to the people on the eve of country's first independence day of the new millennium. Paying glittering tributes to the patriots who sacrificed their lives to achievce freedom for the country, Mr Shafi reiterated that this hard-won freedom has to be preserved and maintained at every cost. He said this is due to the sacrifices of our great martyrs like Bhagat Singh, Sukh Dev, Raj Guru, Moulana Abul Kalam Azad, Sardar Patel and Mahatma Gandhi that we are enjoying the fruit of freedom. The Minister while referring to the leaping strides made by the nation during last 53 years in different socio-political spheres said that we are proud of our multidimensational progess in various spheres of science, technology, space research, industries and agriculture etc. He said with the socio-economic development of entire country our State also progressed by leaps and bounds under the stewardship of late Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah in which Father of the Nation had visualised a 'ray of hope' at a time when entire sub continent was burning in the flames of communal hatred and frenzy. Mr Shafi said that India is the only country in the world which is privileged to have unity in diversity and the principles of secularism, socialism and democracy which are most suitable for our historic culture. He said no doubt we have achieved political independence but economic independence is yet to be achieved. Mr Shafi said that our country has still 40 percent illiterates and 30 per cent people are living below poverty line. He said the evils of communalism, unemployment, poverty and backwardness are still raising their ugly heads and eating into the vitals of our society. Referring to the proxy war launched by Pakistan Mr Shafi said that our neighbour is actively involved in destabilising the socio-economic fabric of our State which is glittering crown of India. He added that entire world has seen the plight of Pakistani troops and its mercenaries during Kargil War last year. He said that Pakistan should learn a lesson from the bitter defeat which it has suffered in Kargil. The Minister appealed the people to come forward and jointly fight the proxy war and frustrate the nefarious designs of Pakikstan. He complimented the security forces for their unprecedented courage and determination during various operations against evil forces. He appealed the people to take a pledge on this historic day for eradication of a number of social evils from society as also to gird up their lions and stead fastedly proceed for frustrating the evil designs of Pakistan. He eulogised the people for their cooperation to the Government and security forces for their efforts to ride the State from menance of militancy. On the occasion a colourful cultural bonanza comprising Bhangra, Dogri Dances and physical display were also performed by the students of various educational institutions of the district. The Department of Youth Services and Sports had organised the cultural programme. A large number of people attended the programme.
