Rafter shoulder injury puts US Open, Olympics in doubt CINCINNATI, Aug 6: It may take three weeks of rest and shoulder rehabilitation in Bermuda for Australian Patrick Rafter to even consider playing the US Open at the end of the month. The frustrated queenslander had to pull out of this weeks masters event in Cincinnati as his dodgy right shoulder flared up again, becoming too much to risk on court. It was only last October that the 27-year-old underwent surgery on the rotator cuff in the joint. Rafter reluctantly said yesterday after a mandatory on-site medical examination that he wont be back on the ATP tour until hes 100 percent again. "Its a week-to-week thing, I cannot commit to anything at the moment," said the two-time US Open champion, who revealed that the problem began anew during Australias Davis Cup semi-final crushing of Brazil last month. "Id love to say Ive got two weeks off and it will be better. Im hoping to get in a few matches before the US Open, but that might be a bit optimistic." Rafter lost a quarter-final Friday at the masters in Toronto against Czech Journeyman Jiri Novak 3-6 7-6 (7/1) 6-2, taking two hours of physiotherapy to even get onto court. If rest and more rehabilitation dont help, there is always the unthinkable. "Ive decided not to change my game, and if I cant play my type of game, then I dont want to be on the court," he said. "Its been my game my whole life. "I dont have that many years left to develop another game anyway, ive got to maintain and work around the way I play. Thats how I get my best results." Rafter is worried as much about the Sydney Games - and the December Davis Cup final - as he is about fronting up for the final grand slam of the year in New York which starts August 28. "Ive got to sit and take it easy now, my goal is to get ready for the US Open as best I can." And Sydney? "Ive never been to the Olympics, Id Iike to go. Im going to be in australia carrying the torch (near the opera house) so Id better be ready to play." Doctors tell Rafter that his serving shoulder is fatigued after a hard summer slog which included a title on grass in Holland, the Wimbledon final against Pete Sampras and the Davis Cup effort. Lone wolf Rafter, who has never even travelled with a full-time coach, said onces hes back in action, he will likely have to hire some help for the problem. "Ill be looking for a full-time physio to travel with me," he said, adding that the Davis Cup final in Spain for holder Australia is another of his major motivators for getting fit again. "Im not going to miss a Davis Cup final again," he emphasised. "Ill make sure Im ready for that." (AFP) |
Agassi, Sampras need to regroup in Cincinnati CINCINNATI, Aug 6: Andre Agassi and Pete Sampras will try to regroup at the second straight masters series event in as many weeks, but Australian patrick rafter is out for the count again with his shoulder problems. Agassi, top seed at the 2.95-million-dollar hard-court tournament being staged in the countryside north of Cincinnati from tomorrow, suffered a first-round ouster a week ago in Canada, while Sampras lost in quarter-finals to Marat Safin. Rafter has pulled out of all competition as he once again is forced to rest the right shoulder which underwent surgery in October and kept him off the atp tour until late February. Agassi and Sampras - the number one and two seeds here as they were last week in Toronto - both need to pick up the pace of their efforts with the US Open start approaching in three weeks. Agassi has had a dismal few months, going out early at Roland Garros where he was champion, losing in the wimbledon semi-finals to Rafter and then banging his back in a minor car crash at home in Las Vegas. He lost in the Toronto first round still feeling the effects of the strain he suffered: "My back wasnt ready for the pounding, its a worry and will be until it gets to 100 percent." Seven-time Wimbledon winner Sampras was mentally kicking himself after double-faulting on match point Friday night to lose to Russias Safin. "Ill start making plans for Cincinnati," he said. "Thats the nature of the sport, you can only be disappointed for so long. You cant let it get you down." With all fit top 50 players required to enter the masters series, the Cincinnati lineup is virtually the same as in Toronto. One addition: Spaniard Alex Corretja, seeded sixth, who did not play in Canada due to exhaustion from winning his previous event in Kitzbuhel, Austria, on clay. Top seed Agassi opens against South African Wayne Ferreira, whose game has come together again in Toronto; Sampras starts with Argentine Mariano Zabaleta. Swede Magnus Norman lost the lead in the season points race with his first-round defeat last week, hell try to recoup against Juan Chela of Argentina. For the second week in succession, the ATP tour will be experimenting with television-friendly purple courts, which seemed to go down well with all concerned when they made their debut in Canada. Seeds: Andre Agassi (USA X1), Pete Sampras (USA X2), Magnus Norman (Swe X3), Gustavo Kuerten (Bra X4), Yevgeny Kafelnikov (Rus X5), Alex Corretja (Spa X6), Thomas Enqvist (Swe x7), Marat Safin (Rus X8), Lleyton Hewitt (Aus X9), Nicolas Lapentti (Ecu X10), Nicolas Kiefer (Ger X11), Juan Carlos Ferrero (Spa X12), Franco Squillari (Arg X13), Younes El Aynaoui (Mar X14), Tim Henman (Gbr X15), Mark Philippoussis (Aus X16). Ejaz says he is happy to be back in reckoning KARACHI, Aug 6: Experienced batsman Ejaz Ahmed, dumped earlier by selectors, has been summoned by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) to join the national training camp ahead of the Singapore Tri-series, officials said yesterday. Ejazs return to the team would, however, depend on his showing in the camp, chief selector Wasim Bari said. "I am happy to be back as I was told to join the national training camp in Karachi by PCB Chairman General Tauqir Zia," Ejaz told AFP. "Hopefully I will be back in the team," he said, denying he had had any differences with coach Javed Miandad. Klusener holds up Lanka with unbeaten 50 COLOMBO, Aug 6: An entertaining 69-run stand between Lance Klusener and Shaun Pollock helped South Africa recover from a poor start to post a first day total of 194 for seven in the third and final cricket test against Sri Lanka today. Klusener, joint man-of-the-match in the Kandy test which South Africa won to square the series, followed his unbeaten century with 50 not out when rain forced an early end to the days play, 42 minutes after tea. The hard-hitting left-hander notched five fours in his 50 off 63 balls in 117 minutes. With captain Pollock, who scored 33 off 64 balls, Klusener raised the total from a shaky 117 for 6 to 186 for seven, before off-spinner Muttiah Muralitharan broke through. Pollock batted confidently, but failed to get on top of a Muralitharan delivery and was bowled off the inside edge for 33. Sri Lanka who lost the second test at Kandy by seven runs last week, got off to a fine start when they captured three wickets for 63 runs by lunch after Sanath Jayasuriya had won the toss for the third time in the series and elected to field. The start was delayed by 20 minutes because of rain, and the Sri Lanka seam bowlers Chaminda Vaas and Ruchira Perera extracted a lot of movement and bounce from the pitch to put South African batting under pressure. Perera returning to the venue where he made his test debut last year, captured the wickets of openers Neil McKenzie and Gary Kirsten, but it was Vaas who ended with the best figures for the day taking three for 50. Two of his wickets fell to brilliant catches on the outfield. Darryl Cullinan was held by a diving Marvan Atapattu at deep square leg when he pulled a delivery with his score on 38. Mark Boucher was out to superb catch by Upul Chandana at cover point taken inches off the ground for four. The third wicket was that of Jacques Kallis who received a superb delivery that rose off a good length to take the outside edge to the wicket-keeper. Muralitharan also entered the fray with two vital wickets. He had Jonty Rhodes and Pollock both playing on to deliveries which spun sharply. Sri Lanka and South Africa are level at one-all in the three-match series.
