Cronje keeps off public view

JOHANNESBURG, Apr 29: Sacked South African cricket captain Hansie Cronje has reportedly gone into seclusion with a ring of security guards to keep prying reporters at bay, three weeks after the match-fixing scandal involving him broke out.

Cronje when contacted at his luxury house in Fancourt Town of the Western Cape province by Johannesburg’s Weekly Mail Daily a few days ago, refused to make any comment till the judicial inquiry into the controversy was over.

I can’t talk to you. After the hearing I can talk, but until then everything must come from my attorney in bloemfontein (his home town), the paper quoted him as saying.

Cronje was named on April 7 by Delhi police in the sensational match-fixing case surrounding South Africa’s one-day series in India last month. He has admitted to accepting between dollars 10,000 to 15,000 from an Indian bookie during the February one-day triseries at home, but has denied allegations of match-fixing.

The paper also quoted South African physio Craig Smith as claiming Cronje brought a mobile phone for a team meeting during the Indian tour.

The only thing I thought was odd was the cell phone that hansie turned up with at a team meeting in India. A free phone, with unlimited calls overseas, given to him by a businessman? that didn’t seem to add up, Weekly Mail quoted Smith as saying. (PTI)
