ICC asks for Pak corruption report

KARACHI, Apr 25: Pakistani cricket officials have been asked to submit a much-delayed report on match-fixing to a special meeting of the International Cricket Council (ICC) next week, local media reported today.

"The instructions have come directly from ICC president Jagmohan Dalmiya," the Dawn newspaper said.

The report by Justice Malik Mohammad Qayyum, which examined the question of corruption in the Pakistani game, was submitted to the Government last October.

Its contents have not been made public nor has it been acted upon by either the Government or the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB).

The ICC emergency meeting, to be held in London, has been called over a mounting corruption controversy.

South African Cricket Chief Ali Bacher alleged last week that two matches in last year’s World Cup had been fixed. His comments followed the sacking of South African captain Hansie Cronje, who admitted taking up to 15,000 dollars from a bookmaker in January.

The news newspaper said the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) had been sent a letter "making it clear to them that their representative should bring the Justice Qayyum findings with him for submission and consideration (at the meeting)".

Qayyum said earlier this month that he was convinced some Pakistani players had been involved in match-fixing and that he was disappointed the report had not been acted upon.

"I am convinced that some of the Pakistan players are involved in match-fixing. They deliberately threw a few games," Qayyum said.

"I have recommended several punitive actions against those players, including life bans."

Qayyum examined more than 75 witnesses in his two-year investi-gation before submitting his report to Pakistan president Rafiq Tarar, who is also patron of the PCB.

The judge has refused to disclose the names of the players alleged to be involved in match fixing and said he could not remember how many players he had recommended be disciplined. (REUTERS)

Bevan and Adams boost Sussex to record score

LONDON, Apr 25: Sussex secured a home tie against holders Gloucestershire in the Benson and Hedges Cup quarter-finals after amassing a record score.

Centuries by Australian Michael Bevan and captain Chris Adams boosted Sussex to a competition-best 316 for three in their game against Essex at Chelmsford yesterday.

Bevan’s unbeaten 157 was a Sussex record, coming off 137 balls with one six and 18 fours. Adams smashed four sixes and 10 fours in his 122 as the pair added 271 for the third wicket to set up a comfortable 62-run victory.

Gloucestershire (154-5) needed the calculators to confirm their place in the last eight after beating Somerset (225) by 10 runs under the Duckworth-Lewis scoring system in a rain-affected tie at Bristol.

Australian leg-spinner Shane Warne helped Hampshire to a two-run win over surrey in a dramatic 10-over slog at the Oval where he took two wickets for just six runs in his two overs.

Derek Kenway hit 47 in Hampshire’s 87 for seven before Surrey replied with 85 for five.

Hampshire will be away to Glamorgan in the quarter-finals after the Welsh County made 238 for eight to beat Northamptonshire by 39 runs at Northampton.

Despite their defeat, Surrey qualified as one of the two best third-placed finishers and will now play Yorkshire at Headingley.

England paceman Darren Gough produced his first four-wicket Benson and Hedges haul for the tykes in restricting Nottinghamshire to 129 for eight in 35 overs at Trent Bridge.

Yorkshire replied with 119 for four and won by six wickets under the Duckworth-Lewis system.

The other quarter-final will be between Lancashire and Durham at Old Trafford after both won their final group games.

Durham made 245 for nine to thrash North division leaders Derbyshire by 138 runs.

Lancashire scored 176 for nine and snatched a dramatic one wicket win over Leicestershire, thanks to a last wicket stand of 28 between Ian Austin and Mike Smethurst.

Leicestershire’s former England all-rounder Chris Lewis, run out without facing a ball, was jeered on and off the pitch on his first appearance for the County since claiming he had been told three England players were implicated in match-fixing. (REUTERS)

Benson and Hedges Cup
Kumble’s haul goes in vain

LONDON, Apr 25: India leg-spinner Anil Kumble’s splendid four-wicket haul went in vain as Lancashire scored a one-wicket win over Leicestershire in the Benson and Hedges Cup one-day cricket tie at Old Trafford yesterday.

Lancashire, chasing a modest 173 for victory, were cruising at 97 for two when Andy Flintoff, jumped out to hit Kumble, finished on his back, and was stumped.

Kumble signalled further decline as he removed Graham Lloyd and Warren Hegg off successive balls. England left-hander Neil Fairbrother and Chris Schofield figured in a recovery but Leicestershire seemed on the verge of a win as 25 runs were still needed when the last wicket pair of smethurst and Austin came together.

The two, however, clinched the issue with Austin hitting the winning boundary off Vince Wells with nine balls left.

The Indian leg-spinner came in for high praise in the British media with Daily Telegraph saying the arrival of Kumble, who mesmerised county batsmen by capturing 105 wickets for Northamptonshire in 1995, was perhaps the most significant and a reproduction of anything like his old form would suit Jack Birkenshaw’s Leicestershire very nicely.

In 1995, Kumble not only took his wickets at a fine 20.4 runs apiece, but shouldered a heavy workload of bowling 900 overs with aplomb.

Equally importantly, Kumble is a good team player with considerable charm and he should fit in perfectly with the ethos espoused by James Whitaker, the former captain who took as chief executive earlier this month from David Collier. (PTI)

India upset Thailand in Fed Cup Tennis Tourney

TOKYO, Apr 25: Indian women came back from two set points down in the deciding tie to upset fourth seeded Thailand on the opening day of the Asia Oceania group I Fed Cup Tennis Tournament in Osaka today.

Top Indian Nirupama Vaidyanathan lost her match in the second singles to tenacious Tamarine Tanasugarn, but returned with fire in the doubles with Manisha Malhotra to stun the Thai pair.

National hardcourt champion Sai Jayalakshmi put India 1-0 ahead beating Napaporn Tongsalee 6-4 6-2 earlier in the day, but Nirupama’s loss to Tanasugarn evened the scores.

Nirupama lost rather tamely to Thai ace Tanasugarn 3-6 3-6 dampening Indian spirits for a while.

I went into the match thinking that singles tie was going to be tough... It wasn’t easy one at all. Tamarine was just better than me and there was nothing that I could do, Nirupama said after the match.

But Nirupama, who last week won ITF Women’s Circuit Tournament in New Delhi, teamed up with her regular partner Manisha Malhotra in the deciding doubles of the best-of-three rubber.

Nirupama saved two set points in the first set tie-break before winning it 7-6 (10/8) against Thai duo of Tanasugarn and Benjamas Sangaram.

Gaining confidence, the crack Indian pair rolled past the better rated Thais for a 7-6 (10/8) 6-2 verdict.

The doubles was what mattered. We had an absolutely open mind and Manisha was really aggressive and supported me well, Nirupama said after the match.

India’s real test will come tomorrow against Japan, who had a rest day today.

Top seeded Japan will be led by AI Sugiyama, a better rated singles player than Nirupama and also an accomplished doubles player with a Grand Slam title under her belt.

The win today must have given Indian team management a new hope and equation to work upon as the doubles tie could again prove to be crucial tomorrow.

We were very confident today because both the singles players have been playing very well during the last two weeks on the ITF Circuit, coach Nandan Bal told PTI over phone from Osaka.

Once we won the first singles, I knew it (the fight) was going into the doubles. Nirupama and Manisha know each other’s style and they can take on anybody, Bal said.

Kazakhstan managed to score a 2-1 win over Hong Kong thanks to Alissa Velts’ 6-4 3-6 6-4 win against Olivia Graveraux.

Hong Kong drew level with Ka Po-Tong winning her singles against Valeriya Khazova 6-1 7-5, but Velts and Khazova teamed up in the doubles and rallied to beat the Hong Kong pair of Ka-Po/Graveraux 4-6 6-4 6-4.

Second seeds China, third seeds Taiwan and Indonesia all won their ties winning both the singles matches in the six-team pool B.

China defeated South Korea 2-1 as Li Na breezed past Jin-Young 6-3 6-3 and Yi Jinggian crushed Cho Yoon-Jeong 6-3 6-1. In the inconsequential doubles, Chae Kyung-Yee and Yoon-Jeong beat Na/Ting pair 6-2 6-2 to earn some consolation. (PTI)

Excelsior Sports Correspondent

JAMMU, Apr 25: The Jammu and Kashmir Kite Association is organising its first Kite festival at Parade Grounds, here from April 27 to 29.

The unique feature of the festival is the 250 kites roped in a single cord and will be flown by an expert from Ahmedabad Mr Rasool Bhai assisted by his party.

Besides, Rasool Bhai, Mr Deep D Kapadia, who is the member of the Golden Kite Club, Mumbai and member of Manza Club International France will all participate. Kapadia has participated in a international Kite festival in Dieppp, France in 1996 and also in Korea.

Another renowned Kite flier, Papu Bhai of Ahmedabad is also expected to fly different designed kites in the three-day festival.

Talking to EXCELSIOR, Mr S S Bhalla, president J&K Kite Association said that the main idea of organising this type of festival in Jammu is to give an exposure to Jammunites to learn the new techniques being adopted by different experts of the working in Kite making.

He further said that the techniques of flying kites with lamps which is famous in Jammu will also he displayed by other experts. He was of the view that Kite flying in Jammu is now decreasing. There was a time when number of shops of Kites were operating in Pacca Danga. But, now, most of the shops have been converted into other businesses. This is the proof that Kite flying have got down in Jammu.

Mr Bhalla informed that in Punjab and Lahore (Pakistan) people still celebrate this festival on Basant Panchami with great enthusiasm whereas flying season in Jammu is Raksha Bandan. He said that another reason for organising this festival in Jammu was to give boost to the diminishing Kite industry as also to the Kite flying culture in the City of Temples.

The Kite associations in other states of the country like Gujrat, Mumbai, Bangalore etc have done a lot for the promotion of this activity, he disclosed.

The festival which is being partly sponsored by the Jammu and Kashmir Bank will be declared open by the Minsiter of State for Food and Supplies on April 27. The Association has appealed all the Jammuites to witness the unique festival in large numbers.

Probe judge to be named by weekend

JOHANNESBURG, Apr 25: The person to head the judicial probe into the match-fixing scandal involving sacked South African skipper Hansie Cronje will be appointed by weekend.

The judge had not been appointed so far because Justice Minister Penuell Maduna had been abroad and the easter weekend had interfered with normal work, Justice Ministry spokesman Graham Abrahams has said.

The Government has not yet decided what form the inquiry would take and how much authority it would be given to collect evidence, he said in an interview.

We know the public want answers but I am afraid we will all just have to wait. But we are still hoping to have the results of the inquiry by the end of may, Abrahams has said.

The South African Government and the United Cricket Board (UCB) announced institution of a judicial probe in the wake of Cronje’s admission that he had accepted between 10,000 and 15,000 from an Indian bookie during the one-day tri-series at home early this year.

Cronje was fired from the team after he admitted to dishonesty In the betting and match-fixing allegations in the sensational case registered by Delhi police against him and four teammates on April 7.

Cronje’s teammates Nicky Boje, Herschelle Gibbs, Pieter Strydom and Henry Williams - also named in the case - have denied all allegations by the Delhi police. (PTI)
