Australia sweep series, win 10th straight test

HAMILTON, Apr 3: Australia wrapped up a series clean sweep and won their 10th consecutive test match with a six-wicket victory over New Zealand in the third test here today.

Steve Waugh’s Australians needed just an hour’s play on the fourth day to seal the victory with Justin Langer scoring his seventh test century to remain 122 not out off 122 balls in Australia’s 212 for four.

Today’s triumph followed victories by 62 runs and six wickets in the opening two tests of the series in Auckland and Wellington.

Wicketkeeper Adam Gilchrist, who set an Australian record of 10 dismissals for the match and hit a match-turning 75 in the first innings, was named man-of-the-match.

It was an incredible victory by the all-conquering Australians, who were totering at 29 for five in their first innings before Damien Martyn’s test best 89 and Gilchrist’s free-wheeling knock turned things decisively around.

In the end the Australians won with one and three-quarters of a day to spare.

It capped an outstanding summer of cricket for Australia, Whitewashing Pakistan, India and New Zealand in three-test series and beating Zimbabwe in a one-off test in Zimbabwe last October.

Australia’s Philippoussis out of cup tie

ADELAIDE, Apr 3: Big-serving Mark Philippoussis has withdrawn from Australia’s Davis Cup quarter-final against Germany later this week because of a leg injury, tennis Australia said on today.

Wayne Arthurs, a 29-year-old Davis Cup part-timer, has been added to the Australian squad in his place.

Philippoussis, a U.S. Open finalist in 1998, injured his left calf muscle in the United States two weeks ago. The injury did not respond to treatment in Melbourne at the weekend.

"It’s unfortunate that mark can’t be here but we have to think long term, and it’s important not to put him at risk this weekend," Australia’s non-playing Davis Cup captain John Newcombe said in a statement.

Arthurs made his Davis Cup debut in last year’s semifinal against Russia in Brisbane, beating Yevgeny Kafelnikov and Marat Safin.

His only other Davis Cup match was in the first round this year when he and Sandon Stolle lost their doubles rubber to Switzerland’s Roger Federer and Lorenzo Manta in Zurich.

While Arthurs has been added to the squad in place of the injured Philippoussis, it is not yet clear who will partner teen-ager Lleyton Hewitt in the singles.

Former U.S. Open champion Pat Rafter was recalled to the Australian squad last month after spending a year out of Davis Cup while recovering from a shoulder injury.

Rafter, a former world number one, was chosen to play doubles with the experienced Mark Woodforde in the tie against Germany.

Newcombe, who is expected to announce his starting team tomorrow, has hinted that Rafter might be handed a singles berth if Philippoussis withdrew.

Hewitt and Philippoussis played singles when Australian beat France in last year’s Davis Cup final.

Australia face Germany in Adelaide from April 7-9. The winner will advance to the world group semifinals against either Brazil or Slovakia. (UNI)

Windies beats Zimbabwe second time too

KINGSTON, Apr 3: West Indies’ batting came good as they plundered their highest score against Zimbabwe to pave the way for a 41-run win at Sabina Park in the second match of their Triangular limited-overs international series.

Pakistan who are yet to play are the other participants.

Left-hander Wavel Hinds, named man-of-the-match, hit 12 fours and one six in an undefeated 116 off 124 balls to be the cornerstone of the West Indies’ total of 280 for three off 50 overs after choosing to bat here yesterday.

Half-centuries from Stuart Carlisle and captain Andy Flower helped Zimbabwe make a scrap of it, but the West Indies bowlers did their home work and restricted their opponents to 239 for eight off 50 overs.

Before a stadium packed with his compatriots, Hinds found a worthy ally in fellow left-handed Jamaican Chris Gayle.

Together they flayed the Zimbabwe attack in the last 15 overs to share an unbroken fourth-wicket stand of 125 off 91 balls which included 13 fours and two sixes.

Gayle was unbeaten on 58 off 45 balls including five fours and one six to help West Indies reach their highest total against Zimbabwe in eight matches.

Opening batsmen Sherwin Campbell and Philo Wallace shared 53 for the first wicket in 11.5 overs, but perished in the space of 22 balls to fast-medium bowler Gary Brent, whose two for 34 from eight overs made him the most successful Zimbabwe bowler.

Rapid Chess Championship
Anand loses cool in iceland as Kasparov bags title

REYKJAVIK, Apr 3: Grandmaster Vishwanathan Anand of India was unable to keep his cool and lost a nerve-wracking final to Garry Kasparov of Russia in the iceland Rapid Chess Championship which concluded here today.

The much-awaited title-clash between the world’s two best players had all the excitement and drama with Anand and Kasparov matching each other move for move.

After the two rapid games ended in 1-1 draw, the players went into a blitz round of two games of five-minutes each, where Kasparov proved his superiority by winning both of them and claiming the title.

Earlier, Anand defeated Migeir Petursson of Iceland 1.5-0.5 and Kasparov beat Alexander Wojtkeiwicz by an identical margin in the two-game semi-finals to set the stage for the summit-clash.

Anand opted for the English opening in the first game of the final and surprised Kasparov by castling on the king side in the middle game. He then ripped open the queen side and succeeded in winning a pawn.

Kasparov looked for counter attack on king side and survived a few anxious moments before they settled for a draw.

In the second game, Anand employed Rubinstein French with black pieces and denied Kasparov any advantage in the middle game. He accepted a pawn sacrifice by the Russian and returned the favour at a right stage.

Kasparov was saddled with weak pawn structure and he settled for a draw by repetition of moves.

To break the stalemate, the players entered into the blitz round of two games of five minutes each.

Anand once again employed the Rubinstein French defence in the first game and equalised comfortably. Kasparov deviated from the earlier game and castled on the king side.

The Indian won a pawn in the opening and then showed his defensive prowess as Kasparov was unable to show any real attacking prospects for white despite having an upper hand in the development of pieces.

The two traded pieces at regular intervals and Kasparov got compensation in form of a dark square bishop that controlled vital squares.

The game should have been a draw with correct play but anand ran short of time and lost.

Pushed to the wall, the Indian maestro went for the kill straightaway in the second game to level the match and take it to the tie-breaker. But Kasparov tackled the attack with perfect moves and created counterplay on the king side.

In a desperate bid to checkmate, Anand scrificed a piece but went two pawns down as Kasparov returned the piece back. Anand called it a day after 29 moves giving Kasparov the title. (PTI)

Resentment brewing among Basketball clubs

Excelsior Sports Correspondent

JAMMU, Apr 3: Strong resentment is brewing among the various basketball clubs, who have denied the affiliation by the Jammu and Kashmir Basketball Association since long.

Little bothered about the career of the players, who are associated with these clubs, the Association paid little attention to their repeated pleas for affiliation with the state body.

In a handout issued here today the Alpha Sports Club and Royal Sports Club alleged that strong resentment is brewing among the players and the clubs against the dictatorial attitude of the state Basketball body. The handout further said that even after visiting the president and general secretary of the association repeatedly, nothing has been done so far in this regard.

The secretaries of these clubs namely, Suresh Pal and Bharat Sharma have urged the Minsiter for Sports, Mr S S Slathia and the Secretary State Sports Council to intervene and help in getting these clubs affiliated with the state body.

They further informed that both of these clubs have a number of national level players who have also won many state level tournaments.

When contacted the general secretary of the J&K Basketball Association, Mr Falail Singh, he was not available for comments.

Sydney Games Qualifying Tourney
Srinivas, Sanjit storm into semifinals

BANGKOK, Apr 3: Lightfly Srinivasa Rao and light welter K Sanjit Singh gave courageous displays to edge out tough rivals and storm into the semifinal as India kept hopes of gaining berths for the Sydney Games bright in the final Asian Zone Olympics Boxing Qualifying Tournament here today.

Railways pugilist Srinivasa Rao matched the might of his mitts with excellent ring craft to edge out Choe Phy Ongchol of North Korea by a wafer thin 9-8 points margin to set up a last four clash against Rahim Mohammad of Iran.

Sanjit Singh braved a right hand injury as he gallantly rallied from a 4-7 second round deficit before pulling off a 15-13 points verdict over binalay of Indonesia to also earn a match-up against an Iranian rival.

The victories landed them within one round of clinching berths for the September Sydney Games and add to the three places India had already sealed from the second qualifying event in South Korea.

Asian Games bantamweight gold medallist Ng Dingko Singh and lightweight pugilist Narendra Rana are also in the fray and they will be in action in quarterfinal bouts tomorrow. Both Srinivasa Rao and Sanjit Singh displayed their skill and maturity as they came through closely fought affairs.

National champion Srinivas Rao matched his strong and better known North Korean rival as they were tied 1-1 after the first round. But in the second, the Indian nullified the height advantage of Ongchol by tactfully moving inside the citadel of his challenger to land a couple of powerful left-right hooks to go ahead 6-4.

Ongchol came back strongly by landed some good scoring blows in the third round and managed to keep his south paw rival away using his long reach. Srinivas made abortive attempts to increase his lead but could score only once with a right cross.

The earlier lead proved handy for Srinivas as he led 7-6 after the third round. The final round proved a touch and go affair as both went after the other before the Indian managed to win by a lone point.

Sanjit Singh weathered early punishment in a hard-fought affair before beating binalay on points. The Indian south paw was trailing 4-7 at the end of the second round after being tied 3-all in the opening round.

The second round was convincingly won by the Indonesian because of Sanjit Singh’s failure to adopt counter-attacking tactics. Binalay landed power-packed right crosses whenever the Indian took the initiative to attack.

But coach Gurbux Singh Sandhu’s advice at the break saw the Assam Rifles pugilist come out with a flurry of left-right combinations to convert the losing bout into a winning one by taking a 11-9 lead after the third round before holding his own in the final round to emerge victor. (PTI)
