Devegowda assails new EXIM policy, demands review BANGALORE, Apr 3: Former Prime Minister H D Devegowda today criticised the new EXIM policy, saying it would deal a severe blow to agriculture sector, SSI and people living Below Poverty Line and demanded its review. Gowda warned at a press conference here the four former premiers including himself would launch an agitation against the Centres decision to give effect to the second phase of economic reforms. He also cautioned that people affected by reforms, which according to him obliterated several sectors of economy, including agro-based industries like animal husbandry and SSIs, would revolt against the Government. Assailing the new EXIM policy under which the Government had shifted 714 commodities from the restricted list, he said it was the gift by the BJP Government, which had earlier fought against economic reforms under its Swadeshi Andolan. The new policy, Gowda said, would result in dumping of goods from other countries despite imposition of import duties. He alleged that the BJP Government signed an agreement with US during December last, without even discussing it in Parliament, to bring in the new policy under the dictates of World Bank and major industrialists. T-Series to vend music on internet NEW DELHI, Apr 3: Super Cassettes Industries Limited (SCIL) is planning to join hands with a silicon valley-based company to hawk music through the net. In addition, the company is planning to set up a separate joint venture company with Time Warner Music for introducing international rock and pop bands in India under the T-Series brand, SCIL Managing Director Bhushan Kumar told UNI here. "Talks are in an advanced stage with a US software company for setting up the portal site which will also allow one to download music in MP3 format and streaming video," he added. Through the venture, a downloading system would be put on the net. Towards this end, SCIL would soon start converting its existing library of music into MP3 format. Targetted at the Indian diaspora, the portal is expected to be up and running in the second half of the year. The entire logisitics of maintaining the E-commerce site is expected to be handled by the US partner. Super Cassettes and its foreign partner would work on a profit-sharing basis and the music rights will remain with Super Cassettes. Regarding the proposed tie-up with Time Warner Music, Mr Kumar said in the first phase, both the companies are negotiating a licensing agreement whereby the international bands under Warner Music would be released in India under the T-Series brand. "For the initial two years, we would be marketing international music here under the licensing agreement on royalty payment basis. After two years, we intend to convert this into a separate joint venture company, with equity investments by both SCIL and Time Warner Music," he added. Though initially both the firms are targetting the music world with this new venture, Mr Kumar added, "in the future, we can also think of joint production of movies, provided both partner find it feasible." the new company would be independent of SCIL. The venture, he said, is part of the SCIL groups thrust on its music business. "T-Series today controls around 65 per cent market in film music and Hindi pop albums. We are now planning to expand our horizons into ghazals and even english music. We have lined up some big artistes in the ghazal field, including Jagjit Singh. For the foray into english music, we are joining hands with Times Warner." The SCIL-Time Warner deal is expected to be finalised close on the heels of the completion of the global merger of US-based Time Warner and UKs EMI Group. EMI Group is merging its music business with Time Warner in a 50-50 joint venture called Warner EMI Music. The group will be valued at about 12 billion sterling, and will be the worlds largest music group with annual revenues of about 4.9 billion sterling. EMIs most powerful stars include the rolling stones, the spice girls and radiohead, while Time Warner has solo artistes and bands like cher, goo goo dolls, staind and red hot chilli peppers under its wings. Meanwhile, Super Cassettes Industries Limited is also planning a major thrust on film production and has lined up several big names in the film industry for directing their films. It is also planning to become a major force in the consumer electronics sector and has tied up with the six billion dollar Sichuan Changhong Electric Company Limited of China for marketing DVD Players and Video CD Players under the T-Series-Changhong Brand in India. The DVD player is priced at Rs 20,000 while the VCD player would sport a price tag of Rs 9,000. The VCD player, he claimed, has all the features that are currently available in the Indian market besides being the only VCD player having RF output. It also comes with a FM karaoke cordless microphone for free. SCIL, he said, is also launching old time Hindi movies on DVDs. In addition, the company is planning to increase the variety of music available on its cassettes as well as penetration in the market. "We intend to grow into a leadership position in home entertainment in the year 2000." In addition to the tie-up, the Rs 300 crore SCIL will continue to market indigenously produced audio systems and colour televisions under the existing T-Series brand. The company also has an existing tie-up with Hyundai Corporation for producing Video CD players. "We will continue to market these products directly through scil. They will complement the Changhong range and not compete with it," he said. SCIL is also eyeing a foray into the home appliances market. "We already have ceiling fans under the T-Series brand...And are planning to extend it to toasters and mixer grinders. We intend to make these products indigenously." (UNI) |
Project launched for development of medicinal plants CHANDIGARH, Apr 3: The Union Ministry of Health and Ayurveda has recently launched an ambitious "vanaspati van" project for development and conservation of medicinal plants in the alpine areas of Himachal Pradesh with an outlay of Rs 8.27 crore. Himachal Minister of State for Ayurveda Mohan Lal said yesterday the zone of Masrund-Mani-Jhalara-Sangahar hill-sides in the state had been identified for development as "vanaspati van" stretching up to 2530 hectares and having an altitude of up to 2700 metres. The Himachal Government had constituted a society for cultivation of medicinal plants to organise training programmes to generate awareness of the utility of medicinal herbs, he said. Inhabitants of these regions would cultivate herbs in collaboration with the Forest and Ayurveda Department officials. The yield of herbs produced by the local people would be procured by the society at remunerative prices for use in the pharmaceutical industry. The Ayurveda Minister said that out of 3000 flowering plant species, more than 500 species were found to be having medicinal properties. More than forty species of medicinal plants in Himachal Pradesh had been declared endangered. The project would conserve and enrich the depleting natural herbal resources, build up a salubrious environment and develop the agro-techniques of the medicinal plants cultivation besides providing nature cure. The vanaspati project being a perennial project would pave way for revitalising the economy of local residents, the minister said. (UNI) |
HC admits MTNL petition against TRAIs notice to its chief NEW DELHI, Apr 3: The Delhi High Court today admitted a petition by Mahanagar Telephones Nigam Ltd (MTNL) challenging a notice by Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) to its Chairman on launching of the cellular service by the Nigam last year. A division bench of Justice Arun Kumar and Justice D K Jain, while admitting the petition said the stay granted by it on October 12, 1999 on TRAIs notice would continue till final disposal of the case. The case will now be listed for regular hearing by the court. The petition was admitted after MTNL General Manager (Technical) Praveen Sharma said that TRAIs show-cause notice to Nigams Chairman-cum-Managing Director S Rajagopalan still holds good as no appellate authority has been set up by the Government to hear an appeals againt regulators order. TRAI has been reconstituted by the Government after Parliament giving approval to a bill to this effect but the appellate authority is yet to be constituted, he said. So long as the appellate tribunal was not set up by the Government, there was no other forum available to seek remedy against TRAIs order, Sharma said. The court in its interim stay on October 12 last year had restrained TRAI from proceeding against MTNL chief on the issue of launching of the mobile services in the capital from Gandhi Jayanti.
